The route leads around the Jungfern Weiher near Ulmen and the Ulmener Maar. The Jungfernsee was once used by the lords of Ulmen Castle as a fishing lake until it silted up. After the former maar was used for peat cutting for a while, it was decided to flood the area again in 1942. Today, the Jungfernweiher is a nature reserve together with the Ulmener Maar.
Numerous endangered species breed on the banks around the area. Snipe and meadow pipit, for example, can be found here. Lots of migratory birds also stop here on their journeys south, making this route very popular with birdwatchers.
