The Leipziger Auwald (colloquially also known as Leipziger Auenwald) is an area of alluvial forest, most of which is located in the city of Leipzig. The area used to be regularly flooded by the Pleiße, Weiße Elster and Luppe rivers. The Leipzig alluvial forest is one of the largest preserved alluvial forests in Central Europe. In spring, the ground flora of the alluvial forest unfolds its colourful splendour. There are numerous spring bloomers. The marsh fritillary has one of its largest occurrences in Germany here. Wild garlic covers the ground of the alluvial forest very densely and extensively with a garlic-like odour.
