Saar-Hunsrück-Steig Stage 12: Kempfeld - Idar-Oberstein

• Partial Closure Wildenburg Tower: Due to safety concerns, the Wildenburg Tower at the Wildenburg wildlife reserve and the surrounding area are currently closed. The National Park Authority has cordoned off the tower area and put in place a diversion for the Saar-Hunsrück-Steig trail. Further information: https://www.nlphh.de/blog/wildenburg-turm-areal-gesperrt-wanderweg-ist-umgeleitet/ This route follows stage 12 of the certified Saar-Hunsrück-Steig premium trail, connecting Wildenburg Castle near Kempfeld with Idar-Oberstein on a scenic and spectacular section. Widely considered one of the most beautiful stretches of the entire trail, the hike runs through the Hunsrück-Hochwald National Park and highlights unique geological features and regional gemstone history. Starting at the Wildenburger Kopf, the path leads to the impressive Mörschieder Burr, a monumental quartzite scree field that opens up magnificent, sweeping vistas across the Hunsrück region. Passing the Steinerne Gästebuch (Stone Guestbook) rock formation, the trail winds through pristine forests down into the Nahe Valley. Shortly before the destination, the Historische Weiherschleife—the last water-powered gemstone grinding mill on the Idarbach—offers fascinating insights into traditional craftsmanship before the stage concludes in the famous gemstone town of Idar-Oberstein. Excellent refreshments and cozy accommodations are available at Wildenburg Castle and in great variety within Idar-Oberstein; wild camping is strictly prohibited within the national park.
