Historic long-distance cycle route from Rhineland-Palatinate to Bavaria This route is part of the German Limes Cycle Route, which runs through four federal states. It is signposted throughout with brown signs bearing the association's logo - a Limes tower surrounded by the letters "D" and "L". The aim of the route was to guide cyclists along the Limes road on well-maintained cycle paths and forest tracks. Like the German Limes Road, the cycle route also follows the Upper German-Rhaetian Limes and connects numerous sights from Roman times. History-loving cyclists can look forward to reconstructed Limes watchtowers, preserved and partially reconstructed forts, protective structures above the ruins of Roman bathing facilities, fortifications with ramparts, ditches and palisades and, of course, impressive museums. There are attractive towns along the route as well as renowned spa and recreation centres along the way. The German Limes Cycle Route also offers plenty of scenic variety. Starting at the Rhine, it leads through the Rhine-Westerwald Nature Park, the Lahn Valley, the Nassau region, the Rheingau-Taunus district, the Hochtaunus Nature Park, the Wetterau, the Main Valley, the Odenwald, the Swabian-Franconian Forest, the Swabian Alb, the New Franconian Lake District, the Altmühltal Nature Park and all the way to the Danube. As the Romans did not have today's cyclists in mind when they built the route, you can expect some hilly sections that will challenge the cyclist's sporting ambitions. The effort is then rewarded by the cultural diversity that the cycle route has to offer. The entire route can be divided into stages with intermediate stops at will. Many places offer good overnight accommodation and fine catering.
