Lake Zülpich Circuit

This loop leads around Lake Zülpich, which emerged as a water sports lake from the former Frechen open-cast lignite mine. The trail usually starts at the main entrance to the lake park, the site of the former state garden show, and offers sweeping views across the expanse of water. The area is an important resting place for migratory birds; especially in winter, coots, great crested grebes and various duck species can be observed here. Reedbeds and young willows grow along the banks, forming the transition to the open agricultural landscape of the Zülpicher Börde. The route is flat and well surfaced, making it ideal for a relaxing walk. A detour to the nearby Roman town of Zülpich also offers exciting insights into the region's ancient history.
