The name of the route reflects the regional tradition of salt (brine) and ore mining and follows winding side roads through a landscape characterised by centuries of industrial and geological history. Historically, this area was one of the most important mining centres in Europe, with the nearby Rammelsberg mine now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Exceptional physical endurance is required to maintain a constant pace over the enormous distance and the constant climbs into the foothills of the Harz Mountains. The route alternates between tarmac roads, deep stretches of forest and wide agricultural areas, which often offer views of the Brocken massif and also require excellent stamina.
