Hengstey Circular Route

Scenic circular route in North Rhine-Westphalia. The path leads up the western side of the Syberg to the Kaiser Wilhelm I monument. In the Ardey Mountains area, the hard coal was easily accessible on the surface and so it was mined early on (in the middle of the 19th century). Today, tunnels or "Pingen" are still visible. There are a number of historical buildings on the Syberg: the Kaiser Wilhelm I monument, the Vincketurm, the ruins of the Syburg, and, somewhat off the beaten path, St. Peter zu Syburg are worth a visit. The paved path along the Ruhr in particular is also heavily used by cyclists. A walk here with dogs is rather unpleasant. . Sure-footedness is sometimes required as the sections up and down are unpaved. There are roots and loose soil material, and the path becomes very narrow in places. The areas of the plateau and the path along the Ruhr are heavily frequented by walkers and day trippers. However, the coal mining area, the descent to the campsite and the walk around it are also easily doable with a dog. There is a place to stop for refreshments along the way.
