At weekends and on public holidays, bus route 792 runs from Detmold to the Hermannsdenkmal car park. On weekdays, bus routes 703 (stop Kreuzweg) and 704 (stop Hiddeser Straße) run to Hiddesen, from where it is only a short walk to the Hermannsdenkmal. The hike begins at the Hermann Monument, which commemorates Arminius the Cheruscan and the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest. The German troops defeated the Roman invaders here in 9 A.D. The monument is open to visitors every day. The route continues to the Berlebeck Eagle Observatory. Here you can marvel at over 180 large and small birds of prey. Free flight shows are organised daily. There is also access to the panoramic terrace and playground, as well as an information centre. If you continue along the route, you will have to overcome a small ascent before you can take a longer break at Falkenburg Castle. This is one of the largest medieval castles in Westphalia. The ruins have been rebuilt piece by piece since 2004. Finally, you will pass the Externsteine if you continue along the route. These impressive rock formations rise 40 metres into the air in the valley between Wiembecke Horn-Bad Meinberg in Lippe and are one of the most important natural and cultural highlights in Germany.
