Erkelenz - Niederzier - Schevenhütte - Herrath

This extensive circular route winds its way through the heart of the Lower Rhine Bay and connects the flat, fertile plains of the Börde with the densely wooded foothills of the Eifel. Much of the journey follows historic agricultural corridors and rural trade routes that have linked these Rhenish communities since the Middle Ages. Considerable physical stamina is required to make the transition from the open fields near Erkelenz to the hilly forest climbs towards Schevenhütte. Tarmac cycle paths and smooth gravel roads characterise the route and offer wide horizons and views of the Rur valley. The terrain is technically uncomplicated and relies on endurance rather than specialised skills as it skirts the northern edge of the Hürtgen Forest.
