Stage 1 of the long-distance hiking trail "Wendland Rundweg", Lower Saxony.
This is the first stage of the Wendland Circular Trail, which runs for almost 200 kilometres through the Elbhöhen-Wendland Nature Park. The first section largely follows the banks of the Elbe and runs for around 14 kilometres from Hitzacker to Wietzetze. Before setting off on this stage, which is classed as beginner-friendly, it is worth exploring the Kneipp spa town of Hitzacker with its pretty half-timbered houses. Afterwards, hikers are greeted by a wealth of beautiful nature between the species-rich Elbe floodplains and the panoramic Elbe heights. Overnight accommodation and refreshment stops are available at the end of the stage.
