Just outside Hamburg, in the north near Duvenstedt, lies the Wittmoor nature reserve. Wittmoor (white moor) is a raised bog that was once used for peat extraction. The tour shown here leads mainly along small paths through the moor, some of which are over wooden footbridges that should be used with caution when wet. The way back leads over a narrow dam that was once used to remove peat. There is wild, unspoilt nature and, depending on the season, fallow deer, cranes and much more to observe. The tour also passes a memorial town commemorating the victims of the Wittmoor concentration camp.
