This immense, 552-kilometre cycle route is an unrivalled test of endurance that winds its way through the entire administrative district of Upper Franconia in Bavaria. The course includes significant, sustained climbs with over 4,550 metres of cumulative elevation gain as it traverses the hilly terrain of the Franconian Forest and Fichtelgebirge. The route requires a trekking or touring bike with gears suitable for mountain biking, as sections with gravel and unpaved forest paths are to be expected. The tour is a cultural delight and connects important historical centres, including the UNESCO World Heritage city of Bamberg and Bayreuth, the famous city of the Richard Wagner Festival. You will also cycle through Franconian Switzerland, which is known worldwide for its unique density of small, traditional breweries. The highest point is reached near the Ochsenkopf at over 800 metres (2,625 feet) above sea level.
