Nebelhornberglauf

Distance of the Nebelhornberglauf: 10.5km and 1,405 metres in altitude. Average gradient: 13.4%. Start is at the market square in Oberstdorf (815m). Finish is the summit station of the Nebelhorn (2,220m). The route is as follows: Market square (815m), Schattenberg ski stadium, Seealpe station (1,280m), Höfatsblick station (1932m), Nebelhornbahn summit station (2,220m). Track surface: 8.9 km asphalt/concrete, 1.6 km natural path (wide forest road). In terms of conditions, the run is similar to the Kitzbüheler Horn road mountain run. The landscape from Höfatsblick to the summit station is very impressive. What makes the run interesting is the elevation profile: if the 13.4% average gradient is already quite demanding, the actual course reveals the true challenges. The route is actually divided into two mountain runs. The first begins at around kilometre 1.7 (890m) and ends at 4.5km (1,250m). Over these 2.8km, 360 metres in altitude have to be covered. This corresponds to an average gradient of 12.7%. Here the route climbs steeply on a tarmac road, but is still easy to run. Then the route is relatively flat for approx. 1km (approx. 50 metres). The second and hardest part begins at 5.58km (1,309m). Up to the finish at 10.5 km (2,197m measured) there are 4.9 kilometres with 887.84 metres of altitude to cover. This corresponds to an average gradient of 18%. This last part is one of the steepest mountain sections and is the main attraction of the race. A trained runner needs less than 1:25 to complete the course, while the fastest runners need 1:05. The course record is 1:00.
