Mainradweg (Radfernweg)

Popular long-distance cycle route full of natural and cultural monuments along the River Main The Mainradweg is an official long-distance cycle route of numerous German tourism organisations and runs through the federal states of Bavaria and Rhineland-Palatinate. The signage consists of a grey and green square with the inscription "mainradweg". The Main has two sources: The Red Main rises on the eastern edge of the Franconian Alb near Creußen, the White Main about 52 kilometres away in the Fichtelgebirge. The source rivers join at Kulmbach and flow past Franconian Switzerland. With very little gradient, the river now cuts deep between the Haßberge mountains and the Steigerwald forest to Schweinfurt in the basin of the same name. The Main now describes a triangle to the south in the direction of Kitzingen and Würzburg and crosses the Franconian Gäuland. Via Wertheim and Miltenberg, it passes numerous castles in the Spessart towards the Taunus. Aschaffenburg is on the way and then Frankfurt before the Main reaches the Upper Rhine Plain and flows into the Rhine at Mainz.
