This route is a certified premium hiking trail. Typical of the Rhön, the route is characterised by a great deal of variety: sometimes it leads through idyllic mountain meadows, then again through dense deciduous forests. Much of the landscape is protected, for example as part of the Bavarian High Rhön bird sanctuary.
From the summit of the Kreuzberg, which claims the title of "Holy Mountain of the Franconians" and has a whole group of summit crosses, there is an unrivalled view of the Rhön.
The start is at the Bruder-Franz-Haus near the Kreuzberg monastery church. There are car parks, a bathroom and the Kreuzberg Kloster bus stop here.
