European long-distance hiking trail E10: Bavarian section

The E10 long-distance hiking trail starts in Finland and runs through Germany, Austria, the Czech Republic and Italy. The Bavarian section runs through alpine terrain and has some great highlights to offer. The descent from Austria is to Berchtesgaden. From there, the section begins with a fairly flat path to the 1972 metre high Berchtesgadener Hochthron and the Stöhrhaus (seasonal refreshment stop and overnight accommodation if booked in advance). The descent begins via Hintergern and Maria Gern, Berchtesgaden to Königssee. A special feature is the crossing from there by boat (check timetable and prices) to Bartholomä, at the foot of the Steinernes Meer. This part of the hike is uphill. From the shores of Lake Königssee, the route takes you through several hairpin bends through the forest to the Schrainbach Falls and Mausbach Falls. Follow the path to the Trischübel junction. The route continues straight ahead to the infamous Saugasse - a steep gully. After crossing the Saugasse, you climb up to the well-known Kärlinger Haus, which is open seasonally. There you can stop for a hearty meal before continuing on to the German-Austrian border.
