This hike leads to Ellbachsee, an idyllic cirque lake in the Black Forest National Park, which was formed by the powerful forces of the last ice age around 12,000 years ago. From the starting point, walk through dense coniferous forests up to the barrier-free "Ellbachseeblick" viewing platform. The Douglas fir walkway offers a wide view over the lake and the Ellbach valley as far as the Hornisgrinde. Rare peat mosses and cotton grasses grow in the damp silting zones of the lake, while with a bit of luck, chamois or the rare three-toed woodpecker can be spotted on the steep karst walls. A special feature is the floating peat island in the centre of the lake, which now even bears small bog birch trees. As the descent to the shore is steep and often slippery, sturdy shoes with a good tread are recommended.
