This circular route explores former baroque defence fortifications in the Black Forest. Even today, they still offer magnificent views of the town of Hornberg and the Gutach Valley.
In the 17th and 18th centuries, Margrave Ludwig Wilhelm von Baden-Baden had redoubts and lines built to defend against French troops. The Kinzig and Gutach valleys were also fortified. In the Hornberg district, these included the Ziegelkopf and Schlossschanze entrenchments as well as the castle, supplemented by fortifications in the valley and on the Läutenberg. Above the "Teufelstritt" are the remains of the Markgrafenschanze, followed by the Alte Schanze on the Schondelhöhe. Both are connected by a dry stone wall.
