Unique archaeological finds, the oldest figurative works of art known to mankind, were discovered in the Vogelherd Cave, the Hohlenstein and the Bockstein Cave. 70,000 years ago, these caves were a refuge and storage place for Neanderthals, who retreated into the caves of the Lone Valley to find shelter from the weather and enemies. They probably also had a special mystical significance for the early humans of the Homo sapiens species, as evidenced by the impressive carvings made from mammoth ivory, in particular the unique lion-man, a 30,000-year-old animal-man figure found in the Hohlenstein.
