Best trails near Schloss Walbeck

Cross-border circular hiking trail near Walbeck, North Rhine-Westphalia. The start and finish of this circular walk in the German-Dutch border region is the car park at the Walbeck outdoor pool. Numerous lakes and ponds line the trail, around two thirds of which runs through the Netherlands. Take a beautiful tour by mountain bike, filled with nature, culture and history. You start the route at Arcen Castle. From here you ride straight into nature, through forests and along streams. Having crossed the German border, you pass Castle Haus Steprath deep in the woods. Along a canal you drive back into the Netherlands, into Landgoed De Hamert. There you drive past the Vorstengraf, the largest burial mound in the Netherlands. Through Landgoed Arcen you ride back to the starting point.

The surrounding forest is no longer being exploited, but re-naturalised. Schloss Walbeck is a hotel where you are guaranteed to spend a few pleasant hours. There is a beer garden and a restaurant that are open to everyone. You can also walk through the woods into the Maasduinen, which are beautifully laid out for nature excursions.
