Based on its classical model in ancient Greece, the race is a straight-ahead marathon and is therefore unique in Germany. It runs in a north-south direction from the northernmost municipality in the district of Darmstadt-Dieburg to the southern border in the Odenwald, crosses it and finishes a few kilometres further south at one of the most popular excursion points in the Hessian Odenwald.
