The Steinhuder Meer Nature Park covers around 420 square kilometres. The core zone of the area is the lake "Steinhuder Meer". It also includes many protected areas, which in turn provide habitats for flora and fauna. The extensive moorland areas, floating meadows, dunes, mountains and shady forests of the glacial moraine landscape are home to white-tailed eagles, water buffalo and moor frogs.

At the three information centres Naturparkhaus Mardorf, Steinhude and Insel Wilhelmstein, visitors can find lots of details about the natural features of the region. Admission to the nature park centre is free. It is open from Tue - Fri from 11am - 5pm and at weekends from 11am - 6pm.
