The nature park was founded in 2017 and covers 227 square kilometres of the upper Ammertal, the north-east of the Ammergebirge, the Laber-Aufacker massif and the Tertiary coal mountains between Unternogg and the Echelsbach bridge. The ice-age moors provide a habitat for unique plants, including many orchid species in the nature park, as well as the blue marsh star, feverfew and the yellow-flowering Karlszepter, and the traditional cultivation of the cultural landscape can be experienced with farm tours, animal visits and tastings.

The route is not well marked in places, so the use of an offline map is recommended.

The hiking route leads from the Kolbenbahn valley station via the Kolbenalm, where you can stop for refreshments, to the Kolbensattelhütte. Here there are wonderful panoramic views of the Bavarian Alps, a tree climbing park and several playgrounds. It can get very busy here, especially in good weather. The Pürschlingstraße then takes you back to Oberammergau via the Schleifmühlklamm gorge.
