The circular route starts at the museum or railway station and leads through the Eder valley to where it flows into the Schwalm. There are beautiful views of Altenburg Castle and, from Hopfenberg, of the Eder Valley, Felsberg and the ruins of Heiligenberg. Near the mouth of the Schwalm, when you cross the railway embankment, you come to the site where Rhünda's skull was found. The trail leads through the district of Beuern. It presents hikers with the millennia-old settlement history of this area. The sites document the traces of the first Neolithic farmers, the settlement history and the development of agriculture, which still characterises this region today. Thirteen information boards along the trail explain the prehistoric and early historic artefacts discovered near each board. The highest point of the trail is the Kirchwedel.
