Ample parking south of Little Daren Farm with picnic benches and information board. A circular route following part of Offas Dyke Trail and the English Welsh border. Chalk of two Nuttalls along the way and numerous groups of wild ponies and horses. Flat once on the top with few undulations. the walk down from Black Hill extremely scenic.Show more

The Black Mountains are often neglected due to the popularity of the Brecon Beacons, their near neighbours. They should not be as they offer very similar walking conditions and provide views just as thrilling as those provided on the Beacons. This walk to the mountains which lie on the eastern edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park is a stunning introduction to the Black Mountains. Once the climb to height is done the walk is essentially a ridge walk with exciting views. Five peaks are visited: Pen Twyn Glas, Pen Allt-mawr, Pen Gloch-y-pibwr, Pen Cerrig-calch and Table Mountain. Views provided of more Black Mountains include the superb eastern ridge of the Black Mountains which is a distinct part of the Cambrian Way, the distinct rounded mountain of Mynydd Troed and also Mynydd Llangorse and Pen Tir. Then from Table Mountain there is a great view down to Crickhowell and across to the the cliffs of Craig y Cillau on Twr Pen-cyrn.Show more

Craig y Cilau are two large rock faces that face this trail. At one time the are was a huge quarry where they cut limestone. Keep an eye out for birds and livestock in the area. This area is also well known in the caving community so you may see people emerging along the trail from the caves. Show more

Park in the free Llanthony Priory car park. Being by passing the abbey and going diagonally across the meadow. Head into Wirral Woodsalong the well marked trail. Follow the national trail towards Hatterall Hill, and then on to following the Offa's Dyke signs. Meet up with the Beacons Way route towards Grouse Butts and Cwmyoy. Hike up to the summit and take in the views. At the top, find the stone marker and cairn where you should make a left along the Offa’s Dyke Path. After a little more walking you will come to another cairn. When you see this, continue straight. Later you will come to a stone marker signifying both the high point of the hike and the junction for Llanthony. Descend steeply past the abbey and back to the car.Show more
