Narrow drive along river to trailhead was hard to manage when meeting car coming in opposite direction. Nice walk along river. Popular trail with lots of campers and hikers for late September. Glad we looked up to see neat "hole" rock formation near trailhead on walk back.

stunning view

This trail is quite a climb and gets very rocky the closer you get to the lookout. They clomb is definitely worth it. AMAZING VIEWS.

The Canyon Trail is a very easy trail wnd the constant view if the river makes it very beautiful. It one of my favorite trails in the Bighorns.

Short and steep, beautiful scenery!

Absolutely beautiful!

The views are simply beautiful. We took our dog who is not a trail hiker and she did just fine. The terrain is easy to navigate, with a few steep stretches but overall, easily doable for all. The signage is very vague and does not provide information on trail distance. If you make it to the small creek crossing with log to other side, that is your 2 mike marker. Our dog loved the dipping stop. The trail is active with hikers. We did talk with one seasoned trail hiker and she warned us of rattlesnakes past the creek. She ran into 2 not too up and turned around at that point. She also stated she has never seen them on the path to the creek and she has climbed this trail many times. Highly recommend the hike!

Beautiful as always. Have hiked this trail since I was a little girl. Take the time to jaunt across the bridge and up to the cave-very worth it. Then come back down and hang a left to hike up out of the canyon. The trail will actually eventually lead you to FSR 196 near Bear Lodge (grab lunch!) But that’s about shy of 11 miles one way.

Enjoyed this hike. Kids were able to do this hike well too.

Great hike! We parked where FR 222 intersects with FR 16, there are two stream crossings and some terrain we weren’t sure we could get over with 2wd. My GPS said 3.9 miles round trip even with hiking .85 miles up FR 222 to the trailhead. Forest service roads and trailhead were well marked.

Amazing trail, the views are second to none, just see the photos. This trails engages all 3 senses. Alongside the amazing views, there is the sound of the Tongue river rapids the whole way and the vegetation gives off lovely smells. We started the trail 1.ilea from the trail head where the road narrows because it was not possible to drive an RV closer, but this nicely extended the trail to about 11km up and back. Not to be missed.

First time, had a blast!

I loved this trail! It was a perfect hike. If I didn’t stop and take so many photos I’m sure it would have only been an hour and a half hike. I saw some rock climbers on my way through. As you’re hiking up don’t forget to look back every once in a while. The views are beautiful. However I’m not sure if this is a western thing or not but there was no clear marking to the end of the trail. I kept going past the marker that the app used and I stopped at a meadow at the top

Great cross country ski getaway

Absolutely relaxation. Beautiful walk

Love think hole! Mostly up hill but a wonderful view!

Great drive through the mountains. Was driving to Custer's Cemetery/monument Many hikes in the area.

Beautiful country. Did on way back from Salt Lake to home. Did the little bighorn NP.

Really hard trail but the views are worth it!

Beautiful canyon, easy to follow trail, shady trailhead with pit toilets. Lots of poison oak along the trail, watch out.

Totally cool. Beautiful craggy rocks. Well maintained trail. Some wet spots due to snow melt. The top is spectacular. Look for the little outhouse for two near the top of the trail. Secluded - a great spot to get away from it all. Loved the wildflowers!

It is well worth doing.

It has been a few years, but yes I do remember the beauty.

Beautiful. Saw many birds, small animals, and bugs. The medicine wheel itself was a sight to see. Especially if you catch a ceremony going on.

just did this trail today, we drove up as far as the Black Mountain sign. From there it is approximately 1 mile up hill all the way. Lots of rocks on the trail and the last part going up to the look out required a little rock climbing. Beautiful views at the end.

Nice tree lined hike with cute little meadows and flowers along. Amazing views from the peak, well worth the last distance that does get slightly difficult due to steep and rocky. Need a 4x4 to get up 222 to the trailhead so we just hiked the 1 mi. road.

Way to go Zach! For those of us who did not have a girl with us, the scenery was nice too. I did this route about seven years ago combined with the back road to South Dakota.

Not much to see until you reach the top, but when you do it sure is worth it. Trail is actually only a mile out and a mile back if you actually park at the trail head, but the FR 222 is pretty washed out so you may want to walk from where FR 16 and FR 222 meet if you don't have fourwheel drive and good ground clearance. All in a it was a nice quick hike. Fairly steep, but not incredibly difficult. Recommend to go on a warm and not so windy day.
