Nice little diversion waiting for soccer

It was a nicely maintained trail. There is good elevation change for an 'easy' rated trail. The fact that it was a loop is a big plus.

The only downside to the location is that there is no parking lot. It is a quiet road that you need to park on, so not a deal breaker.

Did you know there is a National Park and a State Park in Cross Plains? Well, neither has developed into a true park yet. Start from the Old Sauk Pass trailhead (walking south) there is a locked gate and an information board. Walking toward the buildings -- they were formerly the Wilkie farm. The barn looks nice, while "US property" signs remind you this is now purchased by NPS. The trail basically circles around abandoned fields, with an open view and a chair on top of a hill. Crossing Old Sauk Pass road (walking north), you enter the state park side. Trials run along and above the Wilkie Gorge, which is a snaking valley with dolomite outcrops. On this snowy day the forest is simply surreal and quiet.
