A bit worn, muddy, and in need of restoring. But yet a great hike close to home.

This trail is quite fun to explore, but it's tricky to stick with. There are a TON of trails in this small park. Some are wide (big enough for a compact car), some are barely wide enough for an adult to walk. It's a huge network.

That said, if you don't mind getting "lost," it's great fun. It would be excellent for mountain-biking because there are several groomed sections with jumps and ramps built into the dirt.

Gorgeous views of the marsh and varied terrain make for an interesting and fun walk. Proximity to Vilas is just an added bonus for the kids!

Great easy walk or run with beautiful views of the isthmus or the northwest shores of Mendota. Lots of little off-shoots to explore with kids, too!

We just finished the Wingra Woods portion of the trail with the kids. Pretty easy walking, great scenery, and we even saw some turkeys. I could see the mosquitoes being bad in the summer, but it’s perfect in the fall.

This is one of my favorite trail running spots in Madison. Gorgeous, wooded trails with beautiful views of Lake Mendota. At the point the view of the capital is spectacular!

Great trail. Definitely a nice easy trail with some nice views of Lake Mendota and a beautiful prairie (Biocore). We went a little farther than just the Picnic Point loop. I don't think I got quite to Frautschi Point! Had a great time with my dog, hubby, sister, bro-in-law and their newborn!

Nice easy hike along lake. Encountered a. Few mosquitoes. Many wildflowers. A few fire pit circles along the way. Many side paths to explore.

Very Easy trail and the view was beautiful. My toddler was able to walk half of it.

This is a neat little trail! The boardwalk was beautiful, although a large section of it is currently down for repairs. Bugs are bad, so bring spray!

This is a really nice Trail for an easy hike. If you do an out and back on the point you have a flat trail that alternates woods and open air. As the point narrows you have the lake on either side. This includes a small beach, great views, and several fire pits with wood provided. There are also several trails that diverge from the main trail that offer more forest and lake views along with a restored prairie. You can access Picnic Point via the Temin Lakeshore path if you want to extend the hike or add in a great bike route.

Iconic hike/walk of Madison. Pretty flat most of the way as you go along the shoreline and through the forest on your way to the beautiful picnic point. Branch off the main trail to other trails to find quieter less busy spots in the woods, beautiful open meadows, and of course the lake.

Easy trail to follow

Good scenery but was a bit sketchy due to the large holes in the piers.

Beautiful hike in the woods with well marked, but complex, trails. Can see some Indian earth mounds. Passes a spring that flows to lake Wingra. Minor elevation gain, easy for kids. Saw some puffball mushrooms on trees, lightly poking them gives out green cloud of spores.

Both times I went to the park were rather miserable. There were so many mosquitoes, I was eaten alive, even with mosquito repellent. This year though has been particularly harsh throughout the state.
Other than that, the first time I went was just atrocious. I was hoping to get the full view of the area and had not really seen the trail map but had heard there were 20 miles of hiking trails. I went to the Visitor Center, and they gave me the map for the Horticultural Gardens. This is not the same as the trail map. I ended up getting so ridiculously lost that I had to go to the main road to find where I was before I officially gave up.
The second time I went was much more enjoyable. The hike was very quiet with pleasant shade in the woods and gentle breezes. The prairie had at least seven-foot tall flora that kept me from getting burnt to a crisp as well. The trails ranged in size from being about ten-feet across to just barely two feet. The variety of this place is astounding and definitely a great thing to come see.
Overall though, this is a quick short jaunt that is completely flat. If this is what you are looking for in the middle of Madison, you're in luck. This is perfect for families or for someone who just wants a quick walk. If you want to hike for a few hours though, this will not suffice largely because it gets old very quickly.

Really unexpected find. I'm new to mountain biking and had a blast here. Read a sign that Mad City Dirt put up, those guys put a lot of work into this place. Pretty tough in my opinion, but there's something for everyone.

Don't try to hike here - more of a druggy trsash dump than anything (syringes and beer cans everywhere).
