This is a nice trail that goes around the entire lake. The people that have houses on the lake have given up a small strip of their land for you to walk on, so be mindful of that. Along those lines, there really aren't too many places to exit that trail once you get on it since it goes through private property. Make sure you bring snacks/water with you for however long you plan on walking.

4/5 stars because during the summer it's pretty crowded and the trail isn't very wide to accommodate the traffic. There are nice lake views and cool houses to see, though. I would do it again.

short but sweet!

We hiked this trail with 15 women from adventuremamas and Wisconsin women trial adventures beginning of spring, it took us 8.5hrs with bathroom breaks and lunch, we went anti-clockwise and planned to hike 3 miles an hour, it's a beautiful challenging hike, be prepared and have fun when you decide to do it, we all parked at the state park. We got lucky with the weather it was 40 degrees and cloudy all the way if you plan to go in the summer start at the sunrise time.

Skiing here is awesome with backcountry skis. Hiking is fun too but often surrounded by vegetation. Only a few peeks out over the lower Wisconsin Riverway

You can see what spectacular mansions were built in the days long ago. The path has some tricky parts but can still be fun. Stops in Lake Geneva, Williams Bay and Fontana along the way can add to the small town feel of long ago.

scenic area, lots of good restaurants and shops if you want to stop in downtown Racine

Great trail with challenging hills!

Roamed these beautiful trails for hours with my dog today. Cant wait to come back with our horses. What a perfect setup for trail riding.

My son and I walked the trail clockwise from Lake Geneva. We stopped for lunch in William's Bay at the Frosty Moose. Excellent sandwiches and milkshakes. In total it took us about 8.5 hours. Great weather for the hike.

This is a historical farm turned park. It has several barns (complete with a brood of chickens attended by volunteers), and a small but diverse trail system going through meadow, woods, farmland. Prairie wildflowers were blooming in July. Easy and satisfying hike.

Great hiking, challenging and historic sceneries.

Moderately steep, well kept, pretty vistas.

I only hiked the northern half -- This is a system of long, well maintained trails. Very wide, no obstacles, with long flat sections interspersed with moderate grades. Good for an exercise, but decidedly uninteresting scenery-wise. Most of the trails have no view; there are a couple places with heavily filtered view toward west or east. The highlight seems to be a pavilion / cabin / shelter complex in the middle. There is a nice open meadow to the east of the complex, though it also offers rather limited views. Most of the trails are open to horses (though I didn't encounter any), some dropped fresh signatures along the way. There is a historical marker about Black Hawk at the northern tip of the trail. Not far away is a system of mounds -- though it is quite difficult to make out the elongated mounds. Also note that AllTrails' black trail lines do not accurately reflect the actual trail at places -- see my recordings for a comparison. This can be occasionally puzzling if you rely on AllTrails map for navigation.

My husband and I did the whole lake over labor day. We walked it in 8.02 hours ( see map my run) LOVED every minute. Pretty easy for most part, some challenging parts. We try and do this once a year!

Loved it... few feet from the lake and McMansions on the other side of you. Awesome residents plant beautiful vegetation. Great for all levels!

Starts at Look out point and heads south to River landing following the bluff, great views over the river valley in many areas. Steep in places. Midway you see Indian mounds, nice highlight of the trail. Also interesting they have a monument to the last passenger pigeon in Wisconsin at this site.

This is a cool hike around the lake looking at some old mansions and if you time it right, you can see mail being delivered by boat.

Who doesn't love mansions?

Best day of my life.

This is an excellent hike, but be sure to take plenty of water as Fontana and Lake Geneva are the main places to get supplies and find restrooms. Also, we tracked about 23 miles on the marked path.

This was a great hike/walk. According to my GPS the entire loop is 21 miles but we ended up with 22 miles with a half mile walk from where we parked to the trail and back. The trail offers some great views and a few different areas to stop for lunch. Bring plenty of water and snack to keep you fueled for this excellent experience.

this is a lake geneva gem ...a must do..too bad bikes are not allowed

I love these trails. I go frequently as there are a few different trails that offer a number of difficulty levels. Some trails allow horseback riding as well as hiking and cross country skiing. I haven't seen any horses in the trails but have come across there manure piles so watch where you step. The trails are dog friendly. Caution during hunting season though as this fall I ran into hunters on the trails twice. They were actually squirrel hunting and some of the bullets were hitting trees a little too close for comfort. Also in the summer the tree growth can get pretty thick and mosquitoes can be unmanageable. Absolutely beautiful scenery though.

21.0 miles per Walk, Talk, & Gawk Path Guide (recommended). Could be 21.5, or 22, at most.
Good walking/running/hiking shoes with best insole/blister resistant sox combo (for you) is important for most. No matter how good of shape you are in, 6-8 hrs (not counting lunch, breaks, or photo ops) is a long time on your feet.
Good intermediate step is take charter boat 1/2 way to Fontana, and hike back. It's 10.5 miles whether you take northern or southern route.
Great variety and some nice surprises on the full loop. Enjoy!

on Blackhawk Ridge Trail

Friday, September 14, 2012

This is a great trial that can be hiked in shorter sections. It has several access points, off of Hwy 78 and near the Cedar Ridge Campground (I think the map shown on All Trails gives an incorrect location). I think it's technically called the "Blackhawk Unit of the Lower Wisconsin Riverway" (http://lwr.state.wi.us/section.asp?linkid=233&locid=50). I have mainly hiked north of the "horse arena" or whatever it is... very quiet. Some little snakes and prickly pear! I like to visit the mounds. Maybe I went to a different trail, but I never saw views of the river. We hope to hike more of the southern sections soon.
