Did this hike on a wet Saturday. Saw no one on the hike except for a forest ranger. Beautiful forest with a nice overlook point. Rated moderate but totally suitable for kids. We ended up doing a loop which was fun and totaled about 5 miles. Lots of trails back there so take a map so you don’t get lost. At some points can be confusing which way to go. Easily accessible from the lake. We had a great time and not too muddy even though had rained.

Brutal yet beautiful! Challenging hike to the top but a very nice, well maintained and clearly marked trail.

The start and stop point could be better marked or described as both myself and another couple spent a decent amount of time trying to find the trail... so here is what I suggest. Follow directions per the map but once you get to the looped road where it shows you start drive just past the loop and park on the left- you’ll see a spot.

From parking to trailhead- continue walking up the road to where it dead ends at a cabin and you will see the trail head sign on the right hand side as you approach the cabin. From here you can go either left or right as it is a looped trail.

Besides a bit of initial confusion finding the trail- the hike was wonderful!

Not walkable. Too much trash.

Simple hike with nice views at the end

great trail for a quick half-day hike. recommended for anyone just starting out or for a quick work out.

This was one of the better trails I explored in the area. There are many optional trails to return to the lake. On a Saturday, this trail was lightly trafficked, probably because the trailhead is difficult to find. Start at the Nature Center, which features live turtles, a snake, and taxidermy exhibit and go to the left of the lake until you cross a short bridge. Also, take a map to determine which trail to take.

Awesome trail, beautiful view at the end!

I highly recommend it! The ending view is like Lindy which is more popular, but this one has fewer people. For our Saturday summer hike, we only passed another couple. Park at the lake and hike back the Dibbon House Trail. It is well marked too! We saw three hawks soaring the canyon.

nice walk around the lake very easy

Great trail and a great view as a reward. There is only a small area to overlook from with no safety features for little ones!

We got on this trail near the fishing lake, so we didn’t do the whole thing. The trail is moderately rocky and a few parts are overgrown, but it’s very clearly marked with trail blazes and intersects with a few other trails. We enjoyed it.

Very fun bike ride with a gorgeous view at the end!

Great hike. Definitely watch for rattlesnakes in the open part of the clay run trail

I really enjoyed this trip. Coming from eastern North Carolina and meeting a friend from Ohio and his nephew into the Dolly Sods wilderness area was a great trip. I expected the weather to be warmer and more humid. But it turned out to be very pleasant. Bugs were not a problem too. The trail was somewhat rocky and in some parts muddy. But all in all we were not hampered or slowed down. We did not get to see any wild life. So I was a little disappointed. There were lots of blue berries and wild flowers.

Nice walk through the WV forest. Wide trail for most part. Took our Lab and Boxer, they loved it.

This is a nice hike, not to difficult with a great view at the end which is a great place to sit for a while and enjoy a drink and maybe have a bite to eat. I would do this trail again.

Not a bad hike and I’m extremely out of shape. Took my time with my 9yr old daughter. If your going just for the “look out” don’t. It isn’t impressive at all. But a nice trail that’s well maintained and clearly marked!

Went on the hike yesterday morning, and the temperature was perfect. We took the North Mont Chateau trail and veered off into some other trails, and at the end clocked in at about 11.5 miles (with 175 floors climbed)! The hike is marked well and has some great views. Walking in between some of the massive rocks, seeing the Iron Furnace and seeing the mini-beach at Cheat Lake were some of the biggest highlights. The overlook of Coopers Rock is amazing but was extremely crowded. If you come during early morning, you may have a better experience. Overall great hike, definitely worth the 5 hours for me. Check out some of my photos. Sitting down afterwards was great haha

Great half day hike. Fairly scenic especially at the overlook. As mentioned, mostly shady, some rocks and roots. Basically, a cliff view. As always, hang on to your little hikers.

Great short hike with spectacular view of the New River Gorge Bridge at the end. There is one slightly steep rocky section. View at the end is on an unprotected cliff. Hang on to your young hikers.

This trail wasn’t too difficult. It had some beautiful mushrooms along the way. I was disappointed at how poorly maintained it was. Grass was pretty high on several parts of the trail.

A nice and easy hike with the end of the river/lake at the starting point of the hike, depending on where you start from. I connected from the Airport Road Trail to make it a little longer of a hike.

Easy hike, well marked trail. Great views once you get to the end. One thing to note, you will be on top of very high cliffs once you reach the end of the trail. I had the idea of swimming the lake once I reached the lookout but realized it would be impossible to get down/back up without serious risk of injury or death.

Nice and easy hike rewarded by a spectacular cliff top view of the lake at the end.

I had a day off and decided to hike this trail, since all the reviews said the trail was marked and easily followed I knew it would be a great hike. Unfortunately, it's not marked all that great and I ended up taking wrong turn that resulted in 1.5 miles out and back to get back onto the trail turning my 5 mile hike into 8.
I used the app the rest of the trail until i happened upon the end of it which wasn't well marked at all and eventually I just followed the road. Everything was beautiful, and had this been at my peak fitness a couple years ago I wouldn't have felt like I was going to die. I'd recommend using the app to guide you if you're going to follow this trail as it is actually a loop around several connecting trails. If you do that, you'll likely have a much better experience than I. Happy Trails!

I love going to Mountwood and hiking with my dogs. The trails are moderately challenging.

Great hike. The are a few areas of high grass, made by legs itchy.

No review... yet. That picture of the rock formation under photos is known as "The Devil's Tea Table". Back in the old days, the farmers used to tell their wives they were going to work in the fields and then meet up on top of that rock to drink moonshine and play poker. When finally caught, the wives referred to it as "The Devil's Tea Table". At least this is my understanding. My grandfather's old homestead is at the bottom of the lake (before the state claimed eminent domain and bought it from the family). So many fond memories of the valley and hollows before Mountwood was constructed. Psst... I'm coming up in a few weeks to hike the trails. I haven't been on the trails since the originally opened this park. Looking forward to it. Almost Heaven... here I come! :)

Not very difficult even for a beginner one hill in one hill out. Makes for a quick hike and includes a creek crossing.
