Blackwater falls state park is so fun! Most of the roads are paved and it is easy to navigate. The campground had nice hot showers and was very spacious. I would get there early and reserve your spot as it fills up quickly! The falls are beautiful as well with rhododendrons everywhere. We also tried paddle boarding on the lake and the petting zoo. I highly recommend!

The falls were pretty, we started right near the lodge, where the falls is, rest of the hike was just forest, peaceful but not as exciting as I had hoped it to be.

This was a great hike. A lot of forest views. We went up to Balanced Rock and kept going until we came out at the "farm" where the Yellow Birch Trail started. It had rained the day before, so boots were definitely nice to have. You can go down to the Elakala Falls if you continue down the right, over the hill, where you can see somewhat of a trail. The rocks are slippery (obviously), so use caution. There wasn't a lot of traffic on this trail. In 2 hours we only passed four people. If anyone else is into stickers for their water bottles or laptops, the gift shop by the actual Blackwater Falls has a ton. Great trail!!

This is more of a short easy walk than a hike. Regardless, the waterfall is very beautiful. I would post pictures but it have been well covered by others previous to me. I read in the West Virginia visitor's guide that these falls are the most photographed place in all of West Virginia. Although the falls were out of the way from any large cities (thankfully), the entire park was clean and it is definitely worth visiting when in West Virginia.

Great day hike with a beautiful vista at the end. Today it was especially muddy, but definitely passable. Unless you have a Jeep (or other serious 4WD vehicle), you can't get to the trailhead from Blackwater Falls State Park. You need to pick up Canaan Loop Road from Route 32 near Canaan Heights. From there it's a 10-ish mile drive along a gravel/dirt fire road (which is a beautiful trip in and of itself).

Easy hike. Mostly level. Mostly shaded. Great views on rock outcrop. Hang on to your little hikers. Bit of a forest road drive to the trail head. I believe 9 miles or so. Worth doing.

This is a must see for any WV visitor. As mentioned in other reviews, I would call this a short, but moderate hike due to the stairs leading down to the falls. Hike this after some major rainfall for an unbelievable, powerful, waterfall experience. Note that there is handicap access from the other side of the park. The view is a little farther away, but still spectacular.

Great half day hike. Fairly scenic especially at the overlook. As mentioned, mostly shady, some rocks and roots. Basically, a cliff view. As always, hang on to your little hikers.

on Red Creek Trail

Red Creek is a great hike. I did this with a friend as part of a three day/two night Dolly Sods trip. As with many of the trails in the Dolly Sods be careful to stay on trail— at times it is easy to get sidetracked.
There are some spectacular campgrounds along the upper parts of this trail. We stayed at one with a waterfall that was perfect to sit under after a tough day of hiking.

Tried to get to this trail via Loop Rd from Blackwater Falls side & had to turn around. The road conditions are rougher than I expected. Its so washed out that there was no way my SUV would have cleared the rock drop offs. Also some very deep puddles that cannot be crossed. I recommend you find another route unless you have a Jeep & like an off-road challenge.

Beautiful falls! Fairly easy just lots of stairs.

I’ve been going to Dolly Sods for many years, and absolutely love it ❤️

Absolutly Beautiful falls, State park is kept in excellant condition.

This is worth the stop. Although i would not review it as easy because of the incline and steps.

With everyones different skill level i would definately call it moderate.

Beautiful waterfall! Worth the quick stop. Just 0.3 miles down, almost all stairs.

Great walk

I wouldn’t consider this an easy trail due to climbing back up the stairs. But it’s well worth doing!

Fun place for families; easy little walk from the parking lot for a great view of the falls. There's another nice overlook on the other side of the park, from a higher vantage point. Both are worth stopping for. Keep driving around the park and you'll encounter several nice waterfall views, trailheads for more legitimate hiking trails, and likely several very friendly deer waiting to be fed by tourists (don't do it!). Overall, a very picturesque park filled with mature rhododendrons and evergreen trees.

Just got back from a trip there. Beautiful scenery. A lot of the trail is very rocky. Not pebbles but large stones you have to negotiate. We happened to go in the rain and the trail was a creek with a few larger pools that presented challenges to keeping your feet dry. The creek was up do to the rain and was quite impressive. Multiple camps sights down by the creeks edge. We made it from the parking lot at the top of fire road 80 to the campsites in about 2 hours or so carrying packs.

Great, easy walk.

check road conditions when you're planning to do this trail! tried to get to this trail yesterday and it was completely inaccessible - forest rd 244 is closed for the year and with all the recent rain, canaan loop rd past lindy point was almost impassable (it's normally a rougher rd but it's currently full of giant pot holes and swamped in some areas). if you have a truck/jeep/4 wheeler you would probably be fine coming in from the lindy point side, but i couldn't make it in an AWD subaru.

Autumn colors are on full display right now and looking lovely as ever. This was a very easy walk in the woods, mostly stairs.

Beautiful day for a hike in Davis, WV. Parked at Blackwater Lodge and found many trails. Stop in the lodge first and ask for a trails map. Hiked app. 6 miles and I had the three trails I was on all to myself. Falls were running low due to the lack of rain lately. I am staying at Black Bear Lodge just South of Davis, very nice.

More forest than anything. Low falls however only to split before balance rock was completed.

Great view. As noted it can be rocky and narrow path with the blazes marked clearly.
