The basin was snow free 6/29. A long drive to get to the TH but the views were totally worth it. The elevation gain is spread out nicely and never steep so I would rate it as moderate. A great backpacking destination with several options for exploring. The 6 mile spur dirt road signed Irongate Trailhead is a bit rough in a few sections but is not a problem if you have a high clearance vehicle.

Unbelievable views at the top! I feel like I’m in Montana. I also recommend windy peak and Mt Bonaparte if your in the area.

Great trail. It's a little dusty right now- we could use a little rain.

Love this trail!

Great little hike with some awesome waterfalls at the end. We bumped into a buck on our way up. The trail is right off of the Cascade Pass Trail.

I've hiked this area many times. Great views and wonderful open valleys.

This is a review of the trail from above Bonaparte Lake to Mt. Bonaparte. Note that the closest way to drive to this goes through about a mile of nonforest service land that is extremely rough and should only be used by high clearance 4wd. You can drive up past Bonaparte lake and drop down past Lost lake to access this trailhead. There are other trails to this peak, this one is 10 miles round trip. We tried to hike this June 1st 2013 and found it very clogged with blowdowns. The first mile or so is steep and clear and pretty. After that is it just forest and constant over, under and around the blowdowns. We got so exhausted that by the time we got to the junction with 4th of July Trail, we gave it up as we could see that it continued to be littered with down trees. There were no views in this part so it wasn't very interesting.
