This was such a beautiful hike. Started at a high elevation - and then we added another 1600 feet. Weather behaved and stayed dry. Some snow especially on the descent to the lake. Muddy at places but nothing decent shoes would have an issue with. We took our time and enjoyed the lake before heading back - probably spent 5 hours in total. Super hike for dogs as well.

Trails a bit muddy and there is a bit of snow about 3 miles in. It’s nicely padded and I didn’t have to take out my spikes. You pass along a few waterfalls on the way to Melakwa. Check out upper melakwa as well, it’s only about 30 yards past the northern tip of Melakwa. Upper melakwa is partially frozen!

Lovely hike - closer to 8 mile by time we’d walked a little way around the lake. We started at 8:30 and hit some ice patches in the last .5 mile but with warmer temps and more hikers they turned to slush by time we returned. Stunning lake views.

Wonderful trail. Muddy and rocky in many areas especially at the switchbacks. Nothing to stress over if youre wearing proper shoes. Was also slippery at points approaching the lake, made me wish I had poles but all in all still had a great time!

Lovely hike for a Sunday morning. Took me about 3.5 hours roundtrip. Foliage and trees are just about at peak color, if not past that because of the cold snap. Lots of parking at the trailhead, though it was filling up by the time I got down, around 12:30pm. Bathroom at the trailhead was in rough shape. NW Forest Pass required. First straight stretch of the trail is muddy, but nothing too horrible. This is quite a rocky trail, and I would recommend sturdy shoes, even if it's not snowy/muddy. Keep an eye on your pup's paws, too--those rocks are sharp. Definitely recommend microspikes and/or trekking poles on the last bit going down to the lake right now. It's packed ice and very snowy in places. Overall, this is a great hike. Lake and mountain views are a stunning reward for relatively low effort.

5 stars for the view at the top. The views at the peak were definitely worth the hike and any troubles. We went up at 3 PM and met tons of people coming down, but when we got to the top at 4:30 PM we were the only ones up there, which was nice. I imagine it could get kind of crowded at the top at certain times of the day. The cut off for the trail to the peak is easy to miss, we missed it and realized a bit later. At the point of cutting up to the peak, trekking poles and/or micro spikes almost necessary for that stretch. We only had one set of micro spikes for three of us, I slipped and slid on my butt many times going down without them. The road up to the parking lot gets very bumpy but my sedan made it fine with no snow on the road yet

Really lovely hike, and didn’t see a soul until I got to DH’s Balcony. Very peaceful.

Beautiful lake as a reward, switchbacks were average, muddy and slushy snow, freezing water at the lake if you want to go for a swim. Just overall great time
