Entire trail is snowy/ icy. The snow looked fresh and was nice enough to walk on. Less than an inch until the meadow campsites. There were several spots where water runs over the trail and had frozen- some of these were very slippery. On the climb to the basin, the snow was more like 6 inches deep (all powder) but there were spots where you really sink in to it. Hike felt pretty cold because most of it is shaded. Still, gorgeous. 4 stars because of the icy "stairs"

It was soooo cold. Camped the night before the day hike, I mile-in at the fork between Upper Dungeness and Royal Basin. If I knew there were plenty of camp sites, I would have camped closer to Royal Creek. It was 27 degrees that night, glad I had enough gear to last. The whole hike was like hiking in a freezer until Around 1pm in the upper basin. Saw a few trail runners. It’s a good trail for it, but be aware of a large washout halfway, mud here and there and ice on the trail on the incline to Royal Lake. The ice is easy to see and navigate. No micro spikes just yet, or else you would be constantly taking them on/off. Fishing No fish in the upper Dungeness or Royal Creek. At Royal Lake, the cutthroat are spawning and showing their beautiful red fins with white outlines. You can see them from the bank. They are a bit picky because of their state of mind??? You can’t get much in because the gray jays scare them away when they fly around you and land on your pole.

It was a wide flat and easy trail. Probably a little too short and simple for us, but good if you’re looking for a gentle stroll.

HikingGreat!Snow

Difficult hike but worth it for the basin and lakes! Follow the river/ creek most of the way which is beautiful. Start early because the roads back get a little sketchy at nightfall. The basin is behind the lake passed the ranger station and through a valley and around a waterfall. Go a little father and you find another beautiful lake

FishingGreat!Snow

Trail was great. Not a ton of elevation the first few miles but last few were tough. Snowed almost the whole time we were there. Wind chill was very cold. Hiked up to the basin in the morning and it was well worth it. Caught a few beautiful fish as well on Royal Lake.

Boyfriend and I planned to do about 12mi of the hike. Got a late start so we knew we couldn’t complete it. It feels like a very, very long trail through the woods for the first 4ish miles. Beautiful creek alongside, but it just keeps going and going. We got about 3.5-4mi in and lost the trail a couple times at a creek that passes over it, possible washout from heavy rain the last week, as well as a couple of small fallen trees. At that point, we were the only two people on the trail and got spooked because the woods just got denser and scarier and we were struggling to keep track of the trail. Turned around and high tailed it back to the car. Looking forward to trying it again with more time and more people. The views look incredible. I agree that the directions are wrong. Palo Alto to 2880 to Upper Dungeness Trailhead. Apple maps pulls up the trailhead if you search it.

Easier walking on the beach when the tide is not at its highest. Check the tide before heading out. Very nice beach.

BackpackingGreat!

The directions are incorrect. If you go up Palo Alto road, *do not* turn left up Forest Service Road 28, instead hang straight/right and then turn right on Forest Service Road 2880. This will lead you past Dungeness Forks Campground and then you'll come to a T and you'll turn left towards the Dungeness Trails. So aside from getting lost the actual trail itself is amazing and the area is incredibly beautiful. I am very excited to go back again someday.

Walking

Very beautiful. We went during high tide and was just too scared to make it all the way to the lighthouse. Went about a mile out and came back. Still had a very nice time.

Did this last year in August and it was absolutely beautiful. Not too many mosquitoes or bugs in general. Pretty uphill on the way there but the views are definitely worth it. Would recommend if you like lakes and shady hikes.

Loved this beach walk as I find it so peaceful listening to the waves and watching the various types of birds. Note: check the tides in advance. The return from the lighthouse was more challenging as a result of the incoming tide

10/4 Hiked to Baldy. Great weather with awesome views above the clouds. Definitely a steep trail but easy to follow to the summit.
