Did this on an early Sunday morning and were the only ones out there at first. Fully shaded and pretty much straight up the entire way up. as many have said the summit itself has a nice clearing but the view itself is obscured by trees. We continued down a spur trail at the summit that lead us over a ridge and then another landing with a great view of the Olympics. It took us about an hour to get up to the summit then another 15 min to walk over the ridge on the spur trail.

Other reviewers have mentioned not to use Google maps to get there - something must have changed because we had no problems with Google maps getting us to the trailhead (no sketchy, poorly maintained service roads as others suggested).

I did this one with my 2 dogs as part of a loop connecting with Tubal Cain Trail. Shady trail with a good lengthy elevation gain to finish it off. Plenty of water throughout.

great view.....but you can drive up there..

Groomed trail. Beautiful views. Aggressive huge horse flies; bee body with fly wings! Steady climb up. No cover at about 2 miles. Suggest starting early to avoid the hot sun. Beautiful display of wild flowers at 2 miles.

Best maintained hiking trail I’ve been on. Went today and it was beautiful weather! A little hazy at the top but well worth every step up. Take bug spray and use it frequently- lots of bugs. Get there early for parking. Best hiking trail I’ve been on!

Beautiful views. Worth the trek up. Highly recommend putting this on your summer to-hike list. It is a popular hike so preferably do this on a weekday and start early if you like solitude.

Took trail in mid spring after road opened. Terrific views rewarded the hike. Trail crowd was light but topside was crowded with those who drove up. There are benches to enjoy the view of Mt Rainier but I had to wait my turn to sit down and have the snack I packed to eat after the hike up. Furthermore a group of people were chatting very loudly killing the vibe of the view.

This hike might be better before the road opens.

A lot of stairs at the beginning. The river was beautiful! Very dense forest and we had to climb over and crawl under a lot of trees that were blocking the trail. The trail does not take you to the waterfall and you cannot see the waterfall while on the trail itself. You can see the waterfall from an overlook before getting on the trail. Very nice trail and it was beautiful!

Had an amazing time up here today.
Taking forest road 27 to the trailhead is super easy: there are signs for both the upper and lower trailheads. Lower trailhead was crowded on a Saturday morning, but we were able to squeeze into one of the last spots around 8:45am.
Trail is definitely a hard one, but nothing unmanageable and well worth the spectacular views of both the Olympics and Cascades.

Beautiful hike through the forest (hiked 7/7). The trail is well maintained and easy to hike up. I thought this was difficult because of the steep, constant climb. When you reach the summit, don’t stop there; walk the extra half mile past the parking lot to get another view of puget sound.

Incredible views after the first few miles! This is a tough trail for novices, we were pooped when we got back to the the car. But smiling!

Did this hike with a friend a few months ago and like all the other reviews have stated, ITS STEEP. You'll definitely be feeling it at the end. If you've got bad knees i highly suggest trekking poles. We werent as fortunate to get the gorgeous views that others have gotten , instead we were rewarded with a ton of fog, and a killer workout!

wouldn't really consider this a trail, more of an overlook. campground ou'd temporarily closed but just park next to the gate and walk in

Beautiful hike, but not for the faint of heart. It is rated moderate, but is very steep and can destroy someone who is not in the right shape for it.

You'll definitely have spaghetti legs after this hike. Consistent uphill all the way to the top, and a quad killer descent back down. Trail is in great shape, I'm sure the view from the top is awesome when not socked in by clouds.

Difficult at times, and really discouraging when you get to the top and see cars and a lot of people.

Easy to find trailhead. I think the directions on the WTA site are a bit less confusing than the directions on here. Anyway, the trail is in great shape. You are in shade all the way to the top. There are a couple of viewpoints along the way that are worth time for a photo op. I wouldn’t say it’s incredibly steep, but it has a few decent inclines. The summit, as the description states, is wooded and lacks great views. However, we took the spur trail heading south and we were rewarded with great views of Mount Townsend, all the way north, and even a peekaboo view of he north Brother. A great place to have lunch. It was a pleasant hike. The rhododendrons are just beginning to bloom. Pretty good day.

Beautiful and perfect

This is definitely a harder hike, very consistently up hill on the way up without really any break. It took us a while, but I had our 25 pound toddler on my back and we took quite a few breaks. The view at the end was beautiful, well worth it.

The directions from google maps took us down an extremely narrow, unmaintained dirt road filled with huge potholes. The sides of our truck are all now scratched up because of all of the branches sticking out into the road. If your GPS tells you to turn down an over grown unmaintained narrow road DO NOT TURN....I REPEAT, DO NOT TURN! The trail was good exercise but that is about it. Barely any view at all. Not sure where these pictures were taken from but it is highly deceiving. The entire hike was through the forest. Once you reach the top, the view is 95% obstructed by trees. Very disappointing considering I was expecting views like the ones in the pictures. Wouldn’t recommend unless all you’re looking for is a decent cardio workout.

hard hike

Good Conditioning trail :)

loved this. killer elevation gains were incredibly worth it! Between our gear and the switchbacks, we were dead exhausted at the summit. The views as you ascend peak through here and there but the top was incredible. plan on returning again soon!

Very difficult hike. Definitely worth driving to the top but the hike is almost straight up the whole time. It was rainy and cloudy when we went so there was basically no view but I'm sure it's beautiful when it's clear. The mileage is a little off-the hike is 4 miles round trip

Quite the hump from 27190 to the top. Seen a mountain goat at the top of the Townsend. Definitely get there around 0200-0400 to get a good parking spot. If you have those who are out of shape in your group plan on making a lot of little stops due to how steep it is. Beautiful views well maintained trail.

It was a beast!!! BUT so worth the long and hard trail...I don’t usually hike and did it. Make sure you bring anything that takes pictures because if you don’t...you’ll regret it. Start early!!! We hit the upper trail head at 3:30am...so worth it.

A grind up for someone with asthma, but every rest stop had a spectacular view. it was cloudy but that didn't take away from the experience at the top. Snow in some places towards and at the top but not enough to obstruct the trail.

Beautiful hike. Currently 30weeks pregnant and got pretty winded at times but overall it wasn’t too bad. Great trail to bring my dog on as well.

A leg burner for sure, and great cardio workout. Views left a little to be desired and there are better hikes in the area. But great to be outside nonetheless.

Trail was in great condition yesterday! Took the two dogs with me. The 1.8 miles to get to the top, is a straight incline. Small viewpoints here and there on your way up.
