A grind up for someone with asthma, but every rest stop had a spectacular view. it was cloudy but that didn't take away from the experience at the top. Snow in some places towards and at the top but not enough to obstruct the trail.

Lots of rocks on the trail, but a great hike. River is beautiful, sun shines through the trees on nice days. Lots of green. Second fork you want to go right, we went left about 6 miles and had to turn back to get back on track. Got a good scenic drive in as well. Watch out for the pot holes. Happy hiking!

This is a very easy trail, in fact it is one of the easiest 10+ mile hikes I've done. The footpath is gentle and the slopes are gradual. The bridges are in excellent shape, so crossing water is not an issue.

The hike is peaceful and beautiful with much of it along the river. There is an area just over the bridge by Camp Jolley which should hold a tent or two. Sites to pitch a tent at Camp Shady Bark, about 2.8 miles in from the trailhead, are more plentiful.

Beautiful hike. Currently 30weeks pregnant and got pretty winded at times but overall it wasn’t too bad. Great trail to bring my dog on as well.

A leg burner for sure, and great cardio workout. Views left a little to be desired and there are better hikes in the area. But great to be outside nonetheless.

Trail was in great condition yesterday! Took the two dogs with me. The 1.8 miles to get to the top, is a straight incline. Small viewpoints here and there on your way up.

Great workout on a super steep but short hike. Clear views at the top today.

April 26, 18. Road 010 not marked and has some deep potholes.
Enjoyed the challenge of straight up. Loved the lack of people and nature sounds.
Heard Barred Owls chatting ran in to only 1 other hike group. Trail in good shape.

Very difficult for beginners but a great introduction to a summit hike. Was very disappointed from the peak as the view was obstructed and covered in snow. 3/4 of the hike was through snow as well. Do not recommend for this early in the season.

We went all the way down to the water and we definitely weren't prepared for the difficulty of it. It's really steep going down and especially coming up, some of it gets a little rough, but there are stairs for small portions of it. I don't recommend bringing kids unless they're old enough to really have the energy for climbing! It was a great trail, just definitely wasn't easy.

Excellent hike / workout that is sort but sweet - beautiful views at the top!

Great trail that will give you a workout. It was great for the dog. The lookout at the top was a bit socked in so the view can be a bit lackluster if conditions are right.

I chose this trail due to its Moderate rating in difficulty, but damn, it was definitely a reminder of how out of shape I am. Bring hella water. This trail does not let up, it’s literally straight steep for 2 miles. So just a little warning if you get a little huffy and puffy like me. If I would have known, I would have chose a longer hike with less of an incline ! Haha the view is totally worth it though!

great views of North and South sound

This was an amazing trail! It was a constant workout on the way up, but only two miles, so not too bad. The trail is in great condition! Almost all of the snow was gone, just a little bit at the north view point. Both views were breath taking! Coming down was tough on my knees even with poles, but still loved the hike!

Very good hike. I would say moderate to strenuous. Views on top are amazing, mountains on the North view and beautiful views of Hood Canal on South view about another half mile.

One of the best trails in Washington! The scenery is breathtaking on the top.
A little icy the last part of the trails so microspikes were helpful.

Awesome hike! We had a group and had kids with us. The river was beautiful. Found a little beach off the trail and cracked a cold one. The incline going up was a little hard for the little ones but there was plenty of time to take breaks. Definitely worth it and would do it again. Thumbs up! Oh! Also we did the 0.4 mile loop at the top thinking that was the hike... the trail head to the river was actually the first trail to the left behind the map board. Have fun y’all!

Great hike, didn’t go all the way up seeing as we’re not in our best shape and we ran into slippery snow and forgot spikes. expect a solid 2 miles of all up hill. Plan to try again soon though. Tough enough to slow me down and take breaks, but not so tough that it was impossible.

I’d say this is more hard than moderate. It’s 10-20% grades and 2,000 elevation gain at 2 miles up and another 2 down. I’d say poles or a walking stick would be a good idea. Look up the weather conditions before you go, it was a whiteout when I got to the top.

It was nice and beautiful but to windy at the top!

Good hike, very steep, as a averagely fit 23 year old the way up is definitely challenging and very steep without many breaks, the way down will definitely hurt if you don’t have the right shoes and a walking stick. The South point gives a nice view of Seattle as well!

Feb 11 - Great view up top on a sunny day. Wish there wasn’t a fence. Worth walking to the south viewpoint as well. Crampons not needed, only a small amount of packed snow at top.

Loved this hike! The trail was in great condition. No snow on the ground, but it did start snowing heavier when we reached the top. Perfect for a cloudy day mid winter. Steady incline all the way up, and not a lot of views. Also, the road just before the trailhead from Port Angeles had a lot of pot holes.

I give this 5 stars because it's a fairly tame hike for the most amazing views. I don't think this should be rated as hard compared to the average hiker. Yes, it may be hard to some who are out of shape or new to hiking, but definitely not hard in general. If you get a clear day, you will be blown away by the 360 degree view. I definitely recommend!

STEEP.
But worth it! My legs killed by the end of this one! No water on the trail, make sure to bring plenty.

How do you get to the river?

Great hike. The views were stunning. It’s a there and back trial with an option to walk on a road (which adds about 1.5 miles but not as steep). The trail is steep to very steep all the way up but very much worth the view once you make it to the top. I suggest going on a clear day. The trail is very well maintained.

Great trial for kids. The campground is closed because of root disease, but the grounds and trails are open for day use. Parking is limited and was full by the time we left.

snowshoeing

The road getting in was covered in about 6in of snow, with one set of tracks heading to the upper trailhead through about 10in of snow. We decided to risk the upper trailhead. Getting in wasn't as bad as getting out due to the steepness of the first slope out. So be careful if you're headed here in the wintertime. Call the Forestry Service and ask them how they think the road up there will be. We started with microspikes for about 2-3mi, then when the heavy switchbacks (by the waterfall) began we transitioned to snowshoes. It was SLOW going from there, tracking new path (on route) through knee deep fluffy snow. Wasn't terribly difficult to stay on route because below the treeline the cut trees/brush are good indicators. Took us about 6hrs with only enough time at summit to eat a sandwich and hydrate the pup. Be very careful to know the weather at summit because you've got systems coming off the sound or through the Olympics that turn on a dime. Overall, the views were spectacular and made for a wonderful and secluded voyage. Highly recommend. Completed on December 27, 2017.
