Last weekend my golden retriever pup and I enjoyed this trail.

nice trail but can be lost in there without a GPS.

The hike itself is ok, but as others have mentioned, the “view” is underwhelming and does not make for much of a destination. Opt for the Big Tree Ridge Trail instead if you want a truly stunning view from Cougar Mountain. Also, the only moderate section of this trail is the somewhat steep decline to the so called lookout. This can easily be bypassed by continuing down the main trail and then traversing .1 mile to the lookout. Traverse back and finish the loop.

Lovely winter - early spring hike. Lots of open sky on a sunny March day before the maples and alders leaf out. Busy in the first/last mile near trailhead.

Nice view but small view point and trees block view little

I couldn't neccessarily find the De Leo Wall trail because tho it was marked on the map, there was no "you are here" point. Also, none of the trails were marked De Leo Wall.
However, this was a fun little hub of interconnected trails.

Went over the summer, and the hike was eclipsed by how buggy it was. Very pretty, though.

Nice walk in the fall, even after rain. The road is still not that wet. One thing to remember is the viewpoint is nothing but a small platform with little view to Renton direction thru trees. And if you continue after the view point, make sure you do not turn right into a way to local community. Always check GPS for right turns.

There were others on the trail, but it didn't feel busy. Even though it is close to neighborhoods, it feels remote.

Very lightly trafficked on a Saturday morning. Saw a really cool snake. Trails are marked properly and well. No views except for the tall beautiful trees.

A bit shorter and not much elevation. I would consider it a easy hike. A few pretty views but not breath taking. Geocaching treasure hidden ☺️ bring a little nic nac to leave behind if you find it!

The view from De Leo Wall is underwhelming. But the journey itself is quite pleasant.

Got to the trail head around 8:30 this morning and there were only a few cars in the parking lot. I like that you don't need any parking permit for this trail. The map was very useful for navigating all the forks in the trails. Followed to the de leo wall lookout point. Not sure if the lookout point was worth it. It was very steep to go down and you don't actually look at anything other than trees. Followed the trail down there back to the de leo wall trail. I didn't follow the loop to go back the way I came. Instead wandered longer on some of the other trails. That's the part I liked most about this area. You can go on a short walk or go longer by using connecting trails. Will probably go here again to explore other parts.

Quiet and peaceful with a bit of a workout. The loop was taken counterclockwise to avoid steep climbs. Taking the viewpoint #2 trail option had some issues: 1) the trail marker was broken off and left leaning on a tree about 50 yards past the trail - walk back and you'll see the trail downward;. 2) the trail down is getting overgrown and is steep and rocky / sandy / slippery - trekking poles are highly recommended for downhill safety; 3) the view is partially obscured by vegetation; 4) after the trail (you kept going after the viewpoint rather than a tough climb back up), the next trail marker would have you turn left but that takes you back clockwise - instead, just keep going straight to continue.

It felt like I was in a rainforest and as if there was no city around me! Beautiful, lush, and the birds were lovely!

It's a time pass trail. No such interesting view of Renton downtown. A family friendly till view point and a 400ft elevation (steep)for next .2 miles climb if you wanted to continue the loop.this stretch can be tough for kids.
Keep maps handy as there are many deviation and easy to loose your way.

Great little afternoon hike that is both not to easy, but also not a walk in the park as well. We got an amazing view in, on a cloudy Tuesday, and a lot of old growth here too.

One down side is there is nowhere to park in the Highlands Community, so you end up parking in the neighborhood.

4/4/2017 (Tuesday) - The trail is in good condition, no mud, no fallen tree, very light traffic. From the view point to the De Leo Wall peak is steep, seems rarely used.

Nice viewpoint up there. Great marked as well!

Pretty view overlooking Renton and the surrounding wilderness.

11/29/2016 (Tuesday) - After one week, I returned to this trail with Wai for a longer and more complex track to test my knees, which feel OK. The trails on Cougar Mountain seem to be in better conditions than before, especially the Red Town Trail, which has a new layer of gravels. It is a rare sunny afternoon with mild temperature. Viewpoint Trail, which is a bit dangerous, has better traction after rains, and not muddy at all.

Easy. Nice lookout in the middle of the loop.

8/6/22016 (Saturday) -- We moved up to De Leo Wall from Newcastle Highlights rather than Red Town TH, then moved counter-clockwise to the east, took Indian broadway, then Marshall's Hill as a loop. This is a cool cloudy morning with temperature at around 57F. The trail is very dry, so is the terrain as a whole in this season.

We had a fun time. The trail was was well marked and shady.

Very pleasant hike. Well maintained and well marked. Lots of opportunities to connect to other trails if you want to extend your hike. We met several other hikers and runners, but the trail wasn't crowded at all for a summer Sunday afternoon.

Great exercise close to the city, kids loved watching out for slugs on the trail, but not much scenery just heavy forest. Good hike, but better places in the area

A gentle hike that can be enjoyed by many regardless of age or fitness level. I enjoyed the community of people and dogs that shared this trail.

good workout, specially if you go down to view point and up again to trail

3/17/2016 (Thursday) - 9:45 - 11:45, sunny springtime, 44-49F. I moved up along Newcastle's Cross Town Trail. At the open view point, I could see Mt. Rainier clearly, and also the Olympic peaks. The view point is not inside the boundary of the park, so that section of trail is not well-managed, with surface dangerously inclined outward to the steep cliff. That's why I did not bring other people together. On the eastern end of the section, the trail merges to De Leo Wall. One may select to go further downhill to the east, or turn left and move upward to the highest point of De Leo Wall. I turned left and completed a loop, then moved down to my parking place along Newcastle Cross Town trail.
