Great hike for all levels... we continued past Sheep Lake and hiked into the National Park above Crystal lake. Lots of bang for your buck.

Awesome views at the top of the ridge, we drove farther than the directions of where the GPS located bethel ridge and I’m glad we did. Trails are awesome for off roading with atv, bikes, and 4x4. I would say it’s an easy trail for off roading. We camped at the ridge and it was a beautiful and amazing view all throughout. Be warned, there’s A LOT of bugs and flies, bring a spray/ lotion, I wish we brought citronella with us. Camp fires are also not allowed although we’ve seen some pits made by people. All in all it was a great trip.

Fantastic section of the PCT! Went the second weekend in July, 2018. No mosquitos from Chinook until the descent to Crag Lake. Then bam! ONCE YOU STOP, YOU ARE SWARMED BY THE TENS OF THOUSANDS. It was almost like a movie! Great ups and down. Strenuous but doable. We started on Friday night at 5:20 pm and camped at Anderson Lake. Then we took off at about 8:00 am and made it to just past the Twin Sisters (lakes) Trail by 7:00pm. Had to cross the Bumping River on a log that sits upstream by 50 meters. The following morning we hit the train at 8:00 am and made it to White Pass by Noon after a dip in Leechs Lake. A great trip with my son!

One of my favorite overnight hikes.

Saw a huge rattle snake and ran the other way! Did not finish the hike. No shame here.

Good hike with kids. Snow covered parts of the trail so you have to search for it a bit. Sheep lake is beautiful, could spend all day there. We took our dogs, even though it was questioned in previous reviews. Would do this again!

great trip with my wife, daughter and nephew. 3 days, 2 night. trail in great condition. weather was a little wet the first night and second morning but got hot and dried us out. camped the first night at 2 lakes, second night at pipe lake. our ride showed up at white pass and treated us all to a great cheeseburger in Naches WA. wonderful memories.

Beautiful day to go. Tamaracks were golden. Mountain goats were out. Along with both mountains.

Trail description says NO DOGS, but this trail is technically outside of of the park boundary and according to WTA.org, dogs on leash are allowed. I suggested an edit, but there was no place for comments to explain the edit.

I've taken this drive 4 times now. I love wildlife, and this is a perfect opportunity for that. I've camp up there too.
If you take it from white pass it's like 8 miles to the top, if you take it from Nile (chinook pass hw) it's double the distance, id recommend drive up from white pass hw and come down the longer way towards Nile, be careful with crazy drivers taking the downhill corners to fast... I've seen elk up there, coyotes, squires, chipmunks, pikas!!!! :) grouse, jays etc and once u up there I'd recommend adventure yourself into rd 190 all the way to the end is timberwolf mt, amazing views, and also mt goats can be seen up there, if you didn't have any luck try rd 199, I've seen them there too.

Trail is in good shape with short sections of rock, sand and blown down trees. Amazing lake and worth the effort. Starts out on sandridge trail which is a good climb. Trail levels out and is easier after the first 2.5 miles. Awesome day!

My family and I attempted this drive memorial weekend. Near the last mile or so of the drive, there was a sizeable pile of snow blocking most of the road. Our vehicle (a dually) couldn't make it past the narrow gap, but I imagine a traditional 4WD could. Within a couple of weeks we will likely try again, as I imagine it will clear up by then.

nice views extreme grade

Love this hike. Fairly easy to lake but a pretty good work out to the gap. Keep going through gap and stay left on the trail. There's another gap with lake and view of Rainier. No dogs past that point. National Park boundary.

For how many people use this trail it was in pretty good condition. The views are great and the area very clean. I went with a scout troop and even the youngest made the hike to the lake with a pack with only a few breaks. It was difficult to find an empty camp site because we arrived late Friday (around 9pm) but the trail was easy to follow. I will be taking my family up here in the near future.

Trailhead is very easy to find, just past the restroom at end of parking lot. Very nice hike, no bugs in September. Can be a bit dusty if no rain recently and you are following hikers. Suggest hiking past the gap towards Crystal Lake for views of Mt Ranier. Sheep Lake is very picturesque and a great short hike.

Such a nice hike

Definitely one of my favorite hikes. If you make it to the very top of fifes peak east I believe it is the views of Mt.Rainier are spectacular.

I couldn't find the trail head. anyone know where it is.

Solid outing. Good scenery, fresh air and wild flowers. I'd rate the trail difficult as a 3.5 out if 5. We went out beyond the the route marked here and encountered some loose shale and very rutty trails. the views made it worth the effort. An average toyota tacoma should do this with no problem, but subarus will struggle. roads poorly demarcated so don't forget your compass and gps.

Shellrock Lake is beautiful. But getting there today was made more difficult by 89 downed trees on the trail! No joke.

Most were easy to step over, go under, or go around, but it was a constant problem.

This trail is mostly in the trees until it opens up for the last three miles to the lake, then it is classic William O Douglas Wilderness -- open forest, small trees, small lakelets.

I had the parking lot and the trail to myself. it was a solitary, great day on the trail.

Solid trail. Climbs plenty the first two miles. Just miss running to the lake as snow and deep ice blocked me. Spooked a huge bull elk! Trail smooths out after the first 3 miles as it's a little beat up from horse traffic.

Great trail for the kids. Gradual incline up to the lake. 1st part of the trail has a steeper drop off on the side and you can hear the cars on 410 but as soon as you round the corner about a mile in all car sounds fade. Lake has a couple of great areas to relax and eat lunch and play in the lake. We continued on to Sourdough Gap and had great views of the Cascades and Mt. Adams.

This road is fun for off roading or a nice scenic drive up in the woods. My friend and I saw some amazing photo opportunities along the way!
