It was ok. It was pretty much a free graveyard. A lot of burned and fallen/cut trees. A LOT OF SPIDERWEBS on the trail. Also, if you go back via silver lake trail, be prepared to climb over trees and pass through a lumber yard. No trail. I’d say go back down via brownie trail instead of making a loop. Overall, it was nice to get away from smog but don’t recommend if looking for views.

This trail is pretty remote. My friend and I didn’t see anyone on it all day on a Sunday. The trailhead is reachable via an inclined gravel road that is no sweat for anyone with a vehicle that has reasonable clearance, however our Ford Focus struggled, so just a head’s up! There’s a lovely spot to stop around 2.8 miles in with two waterfalls, and two alpine lakes/ponds shortly after. The best views of the valley were probably from the trailhead area. Quite a few downed trees and some overgrown plants, but the trail is super easy to follow. It’s pretty much constant elevation change! Bugs were not that bad. We didn’t make it all the way to the lake because we had to get back, but this is a good 6-7 hour hike for sure.

There were wasp nests all over. Dogs got stung, kids got stung. We tried multiple trails in the area and ran into the same issue. Not recommended at all.

Beautiful hike. To the lake is a lovely trail, there where bugs but nothing I'd consider out of the ordinary. Trail from the Lake to the Peak is a challenge, we lost it a couple of times, the flagging was appreciated. The views at the top where great.

We hiked a portion of the trail and came upon a recent clear cut that interrupted the Sylvia Ridge Trail between the Brownie Trail and Lake Sylvia to the point the trail was unrecognizable. It was difficult to navigate and resulted in scrambling down a hillside with loose soil and rough terrain.

Love this trail up to the Lake. I live close so get to do it a few times a year. Lots of bugs around the Lake. Threw a few flies and caught a few Rainbow Trout. Looked for the trail to the peak, but from what we saw, it was way overgrown and sketchy. Maybe another time. Lots of people using the trail and camping around the lake. It’s become a popular trail all days of the week this year.

This part of the Olympics is beautiful and definitely worth exploring. Make sure to double check directions listed in AllTrails or WTA (Googlemaps took us down a non-existent forest service road and we had to turn around). The walk to Discovery Lake was beautiful and the first section on an old forest service road is an interesting reflection of the way the forest reclaims human altered landscapes. To find Discovery Peak though - good luck. The trail isn’t maintained and while the plastic flagging is helpful, it really is a challenge to find the trail. Maybe if you’re the type of hiker that has a lot of gear, maps, and GPS you’ll be fine but we aren’t those hikers. We ended up scrambling to a peak that may or may not have been Discovery Peak. Definitely didn’t find a book to sign but did find gorgeous views.

Great hike in the SW Olympics. The hike into the lake was fast and smooth, saw a few fish in the lake and checked out a couple camp sights. The hike from the lake to the Peak was short and difficult. Challenging route finding was assisted by a few flagged trees here and there. Summit was nice, unfortunately we were surrounded by clouds and fog for our visit up top. My hiking partner found the book to sign in a plastic case, which appeared to have recently gotten quite wet. The hike down to the lake was slippery. Even with poles I managed to end up on my butt a couple of times. Great hike overall, hope to be back!

First to Review

Overall we loved what we got out of this hike but there are some things you should know: 1. The road leading up to the trailhead is riddled with potholes and feels more like off-roading at times. Our AWD small SUV did okay, but it was touch and go. 2. DOWNLOAD THE MAP. You will need it to navigate to the trailhead and for part of the trail. 3. The hike to the lake is gorgeous with sweeping views of the valley. The lake itself is very buggy (remember some spray, I warned you!) but crystal clear. We saw a bald eagle hang out and take swipe at a fish!. 4. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO SUMMIT. The trail from the lake to Discovery Peak has not been cleared in what looks to be at least a year, possibly more. There are little red plastic ties along what lines up to be the Alltrails map but to call it overgrown is generous. There is basically no trail for most of that hike and at one point we completely lost it. We made it to about 0.3 miles from the summit but there was no trail to speak of, a very steep incline and lots of wildflowers about to be trampled so we turned around. 5. OVERALL: do the hike but stop at the lake. You'll get your drives worth and it really is stunning.
