Explore the most popular river trails near Mazama with hand-curated trail maps and driving directions as well as detailed reviews and photos from hikers, campers and nature lovers like you.

Vehicle drives you to the alpine. Good forestry road with some washboard, rocks and pot holes. Allow 1.5 hours from highway to trailhead. Nice coffee shop/store in Manama to refresh. Although a relatively flat side hill traverse, weather can be an issue with heat in the summer and cold/wind in the late fall. Views are spectacular. No water. Several side peaks to scramble up for the overly energetic.

Starts high and stays high, with minimal elevation meandering. We chose this hike due to the larches, and they did not disappoint! Beautiful full groves and sparse doors of yellow in full color. The ridges of many of the N Cascades peaks keep you company the entire way. Great views, easy hike, and the trail (part of the PCT) is in great shape!

Short snowshoe and nature trail in the Mazama, WA area. This is flat, in the forest, and has some access to the Methow river so you can look for animal tracks near the trail.

Day 2 of my 6 days in this area. The place I camped just below Grasshopper pass is one of the most beautiful I have ever seen. (larches in full swing!) Link below to my blog with lots of pics and more info.

A fun short scramble up the rocky slope from the PCT. The 'trail' up Tatie peak is just a boot path and not well traveled but not very difficult. You won't find any shade to cool down in - not many trees on that peak

The views of surrounding peaks and valleys is pretty amazing. I recommend hiking along the PCT while you are up there or one of the other well marked trails.

2 thumbs up, the other thing better is the easier hike north of Harts Pass, the Windy Pass trail!

Wednesday, August 22, 2012

This is a section of the Pacific Crest trail starting just south of Harts Pass in WA's North Cascades. The hike offers panoramic views of mountains and forests as you hike along the upper ridges of the mountains. The same hike is listed as Grasshopper pass, or Tatie peak.
Start from the Meadows campground and take the PCT south trail.

Great section of the Pacific Crest Trail south of Harts Pass with open views the entire way as you hike along the ridge. Lots of opportunities to scramble up peaks along the way. For the best views take the "trail" up Tatie Peak and also a better defined trail up the ridge to the left of Grasshopper Pass. Close up views of Azurite Peak and Mount Ballard.
