Didn't think about the creeks drying up when we went but was still a good hike! Ended up going a bit farther and doing around 9 miles. The trail wasn't too busy, long for younger kids but saw several families over a few hours.

The hike was very enjoyable. Nice trail and not very busy for a Sunday hike. We did spot a mama black bear and at least one cub foraging in the brush. We reported to authorities and others on the trail. If you are a trail runner consider this!

This sunday I could not get to the parking lot on my Nissan. Last 1/4 mile road was too bad for the regular sedan.
In addition, could not see anything because of the smoke.
So, I don't recommend to visit this place till rains begin and the smoke goes away.

#findsamsayers - Sam went missing on this trail on August 1st. She made the summit around 3pm. Check out the Facebook group for updates and help if you can!

Got some black bear action, stay safe citizens.

Good little day hike. Confusing signage. I think signage makes more sense if you don't park in the new, bigger parking area. Still very enjoyable.

$5 permit needed for parking. No issues finding parking at 4pm. Such a fun hike given variety of nature such as little creeks or a fallen tree blocking the path. Best of all is the reward of a beautiful lake at the top!

beautiful mason lake makes the hike and elevation gain worth it. took my dog and we both went for a swim in mason lake. gorgeous views all along the way. saw lots of fellow hikers along the way.

Love this hike, definitely a climb but so worth the view. Got up early and did it at sunrise, there was still a layer of fog on the water and the ship-man it made for a beautiful hike. It’s a challenge but a goody. Parking is limited so I recommend getting there early!

Definitely a rewarding hike. I loved it.. by far my favorite place.

walked the tunnel early in the morning with my son and two dogs, not to much traffic in the tunnel until we came back. it's a nice walk, remember a jacket and a good flashlight or headlamp. the tunnel is really dark. there was a nice place to sit and relax or have a snack before continuing the hike to twin falls.

Easy with kids! Wish we had packed a picnic!

wonderful trail

The lake is just magical. Must return on a clear day.

Great hike! Awesome payoff! Went in using the actual hiking trail, easy and clear except for a few horse pies!

Great place to ride mountain bikes with pretty shaded areas in trails on hot day and some cool bridges to cross.

Spectular views, mostly well accessible. Bit crowded at the beginning but the further up you get, there will be less people. It gets strenuous at times, but there are enough places to catch your breath and take in the scenery. Parking is difficult if you don’t start early. Bring enough water and snacks.

Arrived 8:30am, no other hikers on the way up. Flowers were in full bloom. My husband and I continued up High Camp, steep terrain but views up there were worth the butt and calf pain. On the way down around 11am we experienced the full bug attack. Recommend wearing a fly mask, and start your hike early before bugs come out.

Beautiful trail, with some steep grade but the changing terrain makes it a fun hike. Views are supposed to be good too but the smoke from forest fires prevent it. Delicious huckleberries and blackberries atop were a nice treat too. I would recommend packing something more than a couple pb&js if you plan to spend close to 8 hrs on the hike like we did.
Oh also, we didn’t experience any bugs, I guess due to the smoke from the fires.

great hike. loved the blackberry bushes. it got noisy sometimes with planes flying over us but other then that I really enjoyed it.

Beautiful hike. The creek is crystal clear and the waterfall at the end is beautiful

We did this hike on Friday, 8/17/18. Glad we did since it wasn't as hazy out as the day after. We got there after 3 PM and the parking lot was full. We hiked it counterclockwise. Breathtaking views everywhere! Some hikers warned us about a black bear although we didn't see one. Lots of marmots and chipmunks tho! I highly recommend this trail. Will definitely go back!

Wow. What an awesome time. I hiked out there just me and my dog for an overnight yesterday! I will say backpacking it was tough. I probably could have went with a little less but realistically I used everything I brought outside of extra food. This trail is a bit rough at first then evening out into a refreshing walk through some fields(3) then gradually getting more difficult. Divided into 3rds the final is the hardest. It begins going up past the Trap lake trail where switchbacks begin. Once at the top you will duck into some timber crossing a ridge then straight up the face of a timber covered mountain. Now that you’re at the top of that you will navigate through 3 boulder fields and over three ridges before you crest into the basin. Pay close attention to the stacked rocks as you might find it difficult crossing the fields. You will find snow melting away into a stream for water if you need it before the final push to the lake! We went all the way to the lake at the top at Thunder mountain. It is stocked with fish since 2014! Pretty great feeling having dinner at last watching fish jump right in front of my tent! Even with the smoke it was still worth every bit. Happy trails guys be safe!

Easy well worth the walk for lighthouse lovers.

I take parts of this trail daily it’s easy & pretty. Ive spotted lots of deer, shore birds, whales and bald eagles depending on the season.

Beautiful trail I suggest adding the McKenzie trail to this for a workout.

The whole hike was excellent! the first few miles started easy then it gradually increase as you work your way up to the top. Going down from the top is a little scary so I suggest you take you steps carefully. It took me almost 4 hours from top to bottom (lower trail)

My favorite hike on the Columbia Gorge. Definitely a workout but the view is totally worth it!!!
