I should have said in my earlier post that this tree is about 2 miles from where the trailhead would be

Attempted this last week 5/10 and about a mile or so on the forest service road there is a large tree that is lying somewhat across the road. Possibly by driving way to the left will enable you to go under.

We wanted to hike to Kelcema lake vis this road a few weeks ago.. we were only about to get about a mile or two up the road to park though. We brought our snowshoes and had a nice mostly flat hike up the road. Unfortunately I think we turned around about a mile from the Lake itself but the walk was gorgeous. We were the only ones there and our dogs had a blast!

Great easy long hike.

6-8" Snow at the lakes - trail is packed snow - slicker than snot in some spots.

beautiful hike and not too many people but the lake was dried up at that point

Wonderfully interesting. The mining town was very interesting, parts of the trail were just through forest, nothing interesting to see, however we passed by some very interesting views. The reward is definitely the end of the trail.

Okay, so I am a little liberal with my five star hikes but I try to avoid baything but a great day. There are reasons for five stars and this one is for a bucnh of reasons combined. No trail pass needed, easy access, low volume of hikers, variety of scenery as well as the perfect length and workout for almost any group or family. The continuation to Bald Mtn provides that extra mile for someone who wants to be challenged.

This hike has woods, meadows, water crossings, rocks and lakes as well as camping. New to this hike in the last two weeks is a honey bucket at the lakes. Please think before using this as it will need to be airlifted out to replace or emtpy.

The berries were out in full as well. We made the summit in about 2 hour and 30 minutes from the TH. Spada below was peekin out from the clouds to show its incredible color, much like that of Blanca Lake. This hike a hidden treasure and where as one need will never be met with this hike checks off almost the whole list. I think the only thing its missing is a waterfall.

A lot of fun with plenty of great unseen trails to return to. Leaves are just starting to change so the various details in the hill and mountain sides were great to observe.

Trail time 60 minutes
Time from Seattle 90 minutes

Went on a Sunday morning in September, crowd definitely comes around lunch, I had place to myself, but passed a dozen cars as I was leaving.

Great little trail, gorgeous lake at the top, but not worth the drive if it's the only thing you plan on doing. Last five miles is up a US Forest Service road, which is pretty, but takes longer than the actual hike to drive up. Likely to camp and hike this one if ever do it again.

Would have given this pleasant hike five stars, but it appears there have been some washouts in recent years. Trail repairs have left some portions of the trail pretty rocky. Saw two mountain bikers who seemed pretty disappointed.

Great hike, trail in good condition. Good for all skill levels, kid and dog friendly. The river is lower then usual due to our dry summer. Lots of artifacts to enjoy in Monte Cristo, flowers blooming. The mileage is misleading. This hike is 9.5 miles from start to finish NOT 8.1 miles like claimed on website.

Took the family and my 3 week old son on his first hike here because it looked short and easy and the lake is pretty nice. The road is definitely not the best and there is one place where it is washed out you need 4 wheel drive to get through with out dragging your car bad. Don't try and park there and walk it's 3 more miles up a gravel dusty I peak up 3 guys attempting this and they were gray covered in dust. This is a great family hike and good for kids of all ages water is warm enough for kids to get in and shallow and safe beach areas

I loved it! Beautiful views & lovely weather! Would love if they put a bridge over the river, because I almost fell off the log

Dirt road to trail rough. Flying bugs an annoyance. Beautiful lake!

July 29 to the summit. The trailhead is 7 miles from the highway and not as manicured as other trails in the area. Not as crowded either. I left the trailhead at 4pm but that put me back pretty late. But everything was beautiful! Particularly the views of the the surrounding mountains and Mt. Rainier. Highly recommended.

went up to Silver lakes and it was still mostly ice floating in the lake. it was cold last night and the mosquitoes were out in full force, but it was worth it. We wanted to make it up to twin lakes but without mini spikes and poles the trail becomes rough. So we hiked out the next day. I'm not sure why Twin Lakes is not on here but it's a great hike.

Beautiful hike. Still heavy snowfields but passable. Lake is frozen still.

I enjoyed this hike; however, part way up a bit of the road (NF-4020) was washed out. I didn't feel confident driving my little commuter car across this area, so I had to park and walk quite a distance up the rest of the hill to the trailhead. My son and I still had a great time and I enjoyed the hike. Just suggest taking a more rugged vehicle if available.

Mostly an easy walk (former railway trail), although there is a river crossing on a wide log and a rocky section. Shallow inclines throughout. Beautiful scenery as you walk along the river and through the mountains. No specific peak or vista, though.

It was fairly crowded on a Saturday, and the abandoned mining town had visitors and volunteers performing maintenance. It's well-marked with a descriptive pamphlet.

Good trail for dogs.

did this about 3 weeks ago good easy trail. first hike of the year for me and my new dog. lots of scenery and the old mining town was cool. one person actually still living there.

Great easy little hike. I wouldn't recommend the road up without 4 wheel drive. We'll do it again!

tried getting to Kelcema today, 6.10.17, but a mile from the trailhead a mud/rock/tree slide completely blocked the road. I don't even know if a tank could get through, looks like its been there at least a year, wish they left a sign at the main road for visitors

Went to early in the year (June) lots and lots of snow about a 2 miles in on the trail but will try it again later in the summer

This trail is more known as the "Walt Bailey Trail."

This is always a great hike, and one you can do solo. Very beautiful through here. There is one section on the road up that is messed up, if a low clearance Audi sedan can get through it almost anyone should be able to, just stay to the right and go through the puddle. The trail has a few muddy areas. Bugs weren't to bad. The road in, and the trail are snow free.

Fun hike for a hot Memorial Day weekend. Crossing the log was a little challenging but it was fun. A chilly refreshing breeze at the top. The old townsite of Monte Cristo was pretty neat.

The trail itself was in really good shape I would say..... there is one part still that has snow over the path, but easy to maneuver through! There is one small part where you will get your feet wet, but not too bad! The path is a little confusing in some parts, stick to the main path , once you get to the log crossing there is no question where to go. The old town is pretty cool that's where we turned around! I would say this was an easy hike, just long! Beautiful scenery!

Partly washed out road - only high clearance vehicles could make it to trailhead. I parked about 4 miles back and walked in. Super nice day out. Once I arrived at the trail, it was very muddy and 75% of the trail had snow on it - but it was manageable with a pole. Very nice hike overall!

I love this hike, but HATE crossing the log. Is there any way to cross without having to cross over the log?
