Swimming is perfect! Huckleberries, thimble berries and salmon berries snack bar is open. Twin Flowers line the trail and Alpine Meadow Groundsel fringes the lake (could someone please confirm identity)
Malo potholes, "if they drive straight they must be drunk", saying from Costa Rica applies.

Great little hike hard on your vehicle's wonderful swim at the lake much warmer than I thought it would be!

LOTS of horse flys. We were attacked for about a quarter mile. Deet couldn’t even deter them from following.

Great hike! Easy trail and the town is so cool! Totally worth the trip.

Went on July 9th 2018. Lots of snow still and very slippery. Never did find the lake and assume it was still covered in snow. Very beautiful though! We want to return later in the summer for sure.
Lost the trail many times because of the snow.
The tree that is down over the road mentioned by other reviews is passable by driving down into the ditch and under the huge tree. Did it with my 2WD Ford Focus no problems. Also saw a regular pick up truck fit under it as well but it was tight.

Perfect weather today for this short hike with a Beautiful lake at the end for a nice picnic! Concur with previous reviews though for the road condition. Trailhead is 5 miles from Mt Loop Hwy and that 10 miles combined probably took just as long as the hike. We made it in our Kia Forte but did scrape in a few spots. If you have similar vehicle and don't know how to navigate these obstacles (potholes, rocks) then may be good to choose another hike. The worst of road is first 2.5 miles I would say.

Relaxed, fairly easy and short hike. The lake is beautiful, although there were a lot of bugs so repellent is a must. I loved seeing all the water lizards swimming around. There are a lot of huge pot holes on the road up so I wouldn't attempt getting there in any low to the ground vehicle.

We could not get to trail head in a Nissan. Pot holes huge. Need a car truck with high clearance. Wish there had been better info on road.

It’s a great trail but long. Views are amazing and well worth the long hike. Don’t recommend having small children though. Once you get to the town it makes it all worth it. Definitely not the easiest hike but very fun. Started at 12 an got back around 6:30. We stopped a couple times and spent an hour or so at the town.

I am a fairly new hiker and this hike was absolutely brutal once you get about a mile from silver lake. There was a few large patches of snow to cross, some pretty steep scrambles and it was raining the entire trip. It was gorgeous but hard for sure!

It was a good hike with my 3 year old sun. The road to the trail head indeed has a lot of potholes but it was fine for my subaru forester, drive slow and you should be fine.
The hike is not very complicated but your kid will need help in some places. Both lakes are beautiful. It took us 45 min to get to the second lake. Be ready for bugs. And please don't leave garbage after yourself.

Checked out the trail on 6/16 to see how far I could get. The first mile in was completely snow free but then suddenly you hit deep snow at the first meadow. After crossing a little stream, it was actually pretty easy snow travel with just grippy trail runners so I made it another mile in no problem. I decided to turn around at 2.3 miles more due to a time issue than anything else. People are clearly going further in as there were a good amount of tracks. It is really beautiful up there and so peaceful. I ran into only two people on a Saturday afternoon. Just be prepared for snow and to navigate with a map/GPS.

Pretty decent trail with some variety. Some parts are wide and well graveled, and others are much more natural. There's a huge downed tree you walk across to get to the other side of the river at one point which is neat. There are some truly spectacular views, especially if you push past Monte Cristo and go farther up the mountain. I would call this a beginner to intermediate trail. I started at 1:30pm and got back to my car around 7:30pm. Make sure to leave anything that's not a necessity at home and lock your car.

Long hike but very easy and BEAUTIFUL !! loved the old mining town and its relics. water along the way is so beautiful and clear but FREEZING! Lots of dogs off leashes. Tons of people and sunshine. Will go back again!

Be aware that after you turn off the Mountain Loop Hwy, the road is quite rough with many potholes. That makes it a bit of slow going getting out to all the trails in that area. This particular hike we only finished in part because the trail wasn't very clear to us. We ended up walking along Lake Evan, which is also quite serene and pretty. Once the trail dries up a bit more it will be even better. Lots of roots and uneven trail. Definitely not ok for anything like strollers and such.

I should have said in my earlier post that this tree is about 2 miles from where the trailhead would be

Attempted this last week 5/10 and about a mile or so on the forest service road there is a large tree that is lying somewhat across the road. Possibly by driving way to the left will enable you to go under.

We wanted to hike to Kelcema lake vis this road a few weeks ago.. we were only about to get about a mile or two up the road to park though. We brought our snowshoes and had a nice mostly flat hike up the road. Unfortunately I think we turned around about a mile from the Lake itself but the walk was gorgeous. We were the only ones there and our dogs had a blast!

Great easy long hike.

6-8" Snow at the lakes - trail is packed snow - slicker than snot in some spots.

beautiful hike and not too many people but the lake was dried up at that point

Wonderfully interesting. The mining town was very interesting, parts of the trail were just through forest, nothing interesting to see, however we passed by some very interesting views. The reward is definitely the end of the trail.

Okay, so I am a little liberal with my five star hikes but I try to avoid baything but a great day. There are reasons for five stars and this one is for a bucnh of reasons combined. No trail pass needed, easy access, low volume of hikers, variety of scenery as well as the perfect length and workout for almost any group or family. The continuation to Bald Mtn provides that extra mile for someone who wants to be challenged.

This hike has woods, meadows, water crossings, rocks and lakes as well as camping. New to this hike in the last two weeks is a honey bucket at the lakes. Please think before using this as it will need to be airlifted out to replace or emtpy.

The berries were out in full as well. We made the summit in about 2 hour and 30 minutes from the TH. Spada below was peekin out from the clouds to show its incredible color, much like that of Blanca Lake. This hike a hidden treasure and where as one need will never be met with this hike checks off almost the whole list. I think the only thing its missing is a waterfall.

A lot of fun with plenty of great unseen trails to return to. Leaves are just starting to change so the various details in the hill and mountain sides were great to observe.
