on Bumping Lake Trail

A beautiful place! Very little elevation. Beautiful views of the lake and surrounding forest. Trail keeps to the lake. We had a great clear day with a slight breeze which kept away any mosquitos. Would highly recommend to others.

Amazing hike. Trail is easy to follow up until the shale rocks. The scramble to the stop is actually climbing. Took the longer route from the peak, that wasn't super easy to follow, especially in the clouds. Alltrails does not list that trail on any map.You can see it on the sat photo though. This trail is about 12 miles.

This is a nice in forest hike, not much in the scenic department, but it was quiet and peaceful. A nice day getaway for sure.

Not a little kid trail (unsafe rocks to climb over multiple times) but great for adults n teens. Based on this being first hike since teenage, not being in shape, and having hip problems still managed to hike 1 mile in to center of lake.. :)

Enjoyed this trail so much, however we were only able to make it about halfway before turning back because it was getting dark. Our GPS did not take us correctly to the trailhead, so we had to figure out some turns. If yours does the same, just know you do not have to turn off on any dirt roads. It is paved until just after you cross next to the lake, where it turns to gravel. The drive (if you go the correct way) was very easy and could be done without 4x4.

The trail is a very even walk with some slight inclines/declines. The path was well maintained, except for a few spots where we climbed over fallen trees. We had 2 adults, 2 dogs and a baby in a backpack carrier.

Now, the drive up and the scenery itself were incredible. We went on 6/2/18, the weather was a beautiful 70 degrees and sunny with a slight breeze. There were very few bugs, and we didn’t see a single other person on this trail.

We’re excited to go back and do the whole thing!

Beautiful views along the lake looking toward Nelson Ridge. Some nice old growth once you get into the woods.

Very pretty along the lake and then it's into a long stretch of forest with a few very large old growth trees.

Hiked this trail yesterday (8/13/2017). Trail is clear / no snow on trail. Beautiful 360 degree views from the peak. It is a bit challenging- lots of elevation gain & switchbacks, but view is worth it. Made good time- about 4hrs up, 2.5 hours down with some time at the top; about 7hrs total round trip for somewhat fit but only moderately experienced hikers.

Photo is taken from the peak facing NW towards Bumping Lake.

Easy flat hike along bumping lake. Trail is longer than 4.9 miles. There are many spots along the trail to sit and have a nice lunch overlooking the lake. Overall if you're looking for a relaxing hike than this is it.

Really awesome views, but be prepared for some tricky snow navigation and scrambling. Waterproof hiking boots and gaiters and hiking poles a must; an ice axe would have been really helpful too. See detailed trip report at

Attempted this trail on the Saturday after memorial day 2017. It began well but at 5600ft and 2.28 miles in, the trail vanished under several feet of snow which still remains at the higher elevations. With no map we deemed it unsafe to wander around aimlessly in attempts to get any higher up to Nelson Ridge and Aix. Hopes to complete this later in the year. Also, I have no clue to what the actual length of the trail is. The USFS trail book that I read list it at about 6 miles one way or 12 miles round trip.

loved this hike

Wonderful hike with some amazing views, bugled with a couple bull elk on the way up to swamp lake, took us 5hrs to hike in, found a great camp on the big cougar lake overlooking the beach, elk bugled from 8pm to 5am, was a great night! Took a short three hour hike Sunday morning up into the bowl above the lakes got some great views and could even see a little portion of bumping lake way in the background from up there. Was a 4hr hike out and only seen one other person at cougar lake and he was on horseback having lunch then riding back out, we were the only ones up there for the night, one of the most beautiful places I have been for sure!

This is an amazing trial that is much longer than most reviews. We started from Swamp Lake Trail (970) and then we took trail 958 towards the lake, it becomes 958a shortly after. It took 4hrs to get to the Cougar Lakes. There is some nice spots for camping. We stayed 2 nights and during that time we saw a few more campers and hikers. Also on the Ridge we saw some elk, this was in the month of July.

Very steep, loose rocks and all around dangerous to hike these days. The trail used to be safer years ago. Beautiful lake with some small rainbows.

A great hike. Did this one when camping at the bumping lake camp grounds and had a great time! Finished it in the middle of July, and it had and amazing view of Mount Baker, and of Mt Rainier both! Definitely worth the pain it took to get up. It's a pretty easy scramble to the summit. I would Definitely recommend this trail!

First off, what a beautiful view from the top. With that said, what a brutal trail it was to get there... I'm just your everyday (not so serious) hiker and this trail almost broke me. There were a few cars parked on the trail head in the morning and the traffic was relatively light considering it's in the heart of Bumping Lake. We filled out our permit on the reader board and took off down the wide (but eventually narrowing) quarry spall lined trail. Immediately, the trail turns and we started our ascent. The trail took us over a few small water runs and a few open rock slide areas but it turned to switchback hell at about 1.5 miles and never stopped til the top. 5 miles into the hike and at the top of the ridge, my butt was kicked but not broken and I wanted to keep but going. Unfortunately, i underestimated the amount of time it would take me to reach the top resulting in my turning around and not being able to summit Aix but nevertheless, the views from Nelson Ridge were amazing and i got some great pictures to celebrate the incredible climb.

Great, flat trail along bumping lake. Gorgeous views. The beautiful step-creek makes the trail! The trail goes on for quite awhile

As hikers we found this nice trail heavily impacted by the equestrians with lots of horse dung. It is a nice hike through old growth forest and we did not encounter any equestrians on our midweek hike. The access road FS 1800 is quite rough and rocky - requires a high clearance vehicle for sure.
