Hiking

This was my 10th trip up old rag, first time up in 2020. The good: the trail has a little bit of everything for everyone. Some nice hiking through woods for trail runners/hikers. Some amazing rock scrambles for the adventurers. Some of the best views in the whole park for the photographers. And a variety of trail personalities for the socialites. The not so good: they re-vamped the parking this year...which was much over due and very needed...great addition. I’m doing so they moved the trail head a little bit. For a brand new section of trail, I was very disappointed in the condition of it. It was tore up already, so I think a few added rocks are needed in areas that had mud sink holes already. Additionally the moved the end. If this is was someone’s first time doing it, they wouldn’t know any different, but for me coming off the trail at the old end spot, then having to get back on and go back up hill for a mile...slightly demoralizing, but I understand the necessity of it. The unavoidable: the lines...I started the hike at about 9, kept a pretty average pace, and by the time I got to the first peak, there was a 45 min back up for all the rock scrambles. These were due to about 3 different spots in the scramble. I’ve never seen it backed up like that, but have heard it’s not unusual. The clouds...I specifically picked this day because the weather app said overcast and I went to get some shots without combating the sun. It was overcast, unfortunately...the overcast was around the the mountain lol, so if you’re a photographer that likes shooting overcast days, have a plan b Incase you drive up to the mountain and see clouds hanging around the peaks and summit...there’s a waterfall hike 4 miles away that would be better in that scenario. All in all a great hike. I took my gf (who had been saying how much she “loves hiking” and I we re established the definition of the term hiking that day) and she had an absolute blast and crushed it. The only area that bothered me was the condition of the brand new trail head. Just needs some refinement so it’ll stay usable for years to come. 10/10.

If you go from the parking, down to cabin and take that route back up your in for a serious incline workout. If you didn’t have a goal, it would feel a bit silly. Started too late in the day. But the cabin was so precious. The area peaceful you can understand why a home was chose there. If you look closely there is an old cemetery with the ancient rock burial technique. I will definitely return seems like a special place, that also kicks your but to get to.

Such an incredible trail, I didn’t think it was too hard at all. I could see the scrambling being hard for some towards the end, but easily doable for most if you’re agile. Summited in 1:30..? Did whole thing in 3 hours, not including stop at the summit. So many views, terrain is pretty rocky/uneven, easy to roll ankle

Hiking

An overnight rain made the trail a little muddy and added some slipperiness to the rock scramble. We arrived at 7:30 on Saturday morning and lot was 1/4 full. Probably 80 hikers on mountain. We had no waits at bottle necks. A hiker who started after us waited 15-30 minutes in these spots. A Park Ranger said people have waited up to two hours at the bottle necks. Hike exceeded my expectations because of the challenging scrambles. The serious hikers, for the most part, were there early. I find it disrespectful to other climbers if you’re taking a long time to get through tight spots. This hike is not easy.

Wow. What a hike. The first mile is fine but you know it’ll be hard. The second mile was awful - I was doubting every decision I ever made that led me to this hike. Then the rock scramble started. It was amazing. So fun and a great distraction from the fact that you’re still climbing several hundred feet and your joints hurt. It’s messy and I got dirty from mud and sliding down rocks but I was enjoying it! Until I realized it just kept freaking going. When we finally reached the summit (technically only 3.8 miles with like 2500’ in elevation gain) it was totally worth it. Brilliant views and super satisfying. The rest of the hike is downhill on rocky, uneven ground and honestly my knees hate me because I’ve aged them twenty years in one hike. Anyway great hike 10/10 would recommend but wow do I hurt.

HikingGreat!RockyScramble

From the point of view of an amateur hiker and first time visitor to Shenandoah: This was simultaneously the best and most challenging hike I've ever done. A steady incline leads you to some pretty tough (but fun!) rock scrambling. The feeling of accomplishment at the summit is second to none. A few notes: definitely bring 2L of water per person. Also pack a lunch for the summit. We did this hike at 730am on a Sunday. The lot was already pretty full but we weren't stressed for parking. But be aware this trail is very crowded on weekends! Also be prepared for the final incline during the last mile. They rerouted the trail at the end. We were not ready for it after all we had done, and the last mile was very mentally challenging.

Very rewarding and very tough - don’t believe anyone who says otherwise! The scrambling includes tight squeezes.

Wonderful hike. Have to wait for the scramble because some people move slower than others. There was a rainbow and sort of cloudy but was even more amazing. It was National Public Lands Day so it was crowded but also free!

It was one of the toughest hike i did in years. Some areas are really tricky and requires good balance. But would do it again.

Took the advice to counterclockwise and didn’t see anyone on trail until the summit. Coming down the trail I saw a few people going up and a black ear crossed the trail ahead of me. The trail has a lot of gravel and larger stones in some sections so watch your footing. But the trail overall is quiet, peaceful, and the view at the top is great.

It’s Old Rag. It was absolutely fantastic. Went on an overcast Friday and it wasn’t very crowded at all. The three kids handled the elevation and the scrambling just fine, but their legs checked out at about mile 8.5. I clocked the total with the new(er) finish at just a hair under 11 miles. My 10 and 7 year old handled it all on their own. The 4 year old required a little assistance, understandably.
