Hiking

Great Sunrise hike. Took me about 2h from the new, upper parking lot next to the Ranger station. Can highly recommend that you have done this climb on Old Rag before in the light or have someone with you who did it before. It's tougher if you do it in the dark. Was great start in the day watching the sunrise from the summit. Enjoy

Great and challenging day hike. Beautiful scenery, waterfalls and a wonderful overlook over Shenandoah and to Old Rag Mountain.

beautiful trail. although the "lake" isn't exactly on the trail. it's a reservoir anyway but you have to tredge a bit through rough terrain off trail to get to a boggy marsh side

Hiking

We hiked in from Skyline Drive, downhill switchbacks and stairs going out then uphill is pretty strenuous coming back. We hiked to the opposite parking lot and back and it was a total of 10 miles, took us just under 6 hours including a few breaks in the middle. Bathroom situation was the only complaint, I’d suggest using the toilets in the dining hall/gift shop down the road as the trees don’t provide a lot of cover and the trail was very popular, there are port-a-potties at the opposite parking lot but they don’t look like they’ve been serviced in quite some time (I think this is due to Covid park closures)... Overall a great hike with lots of shade from the trees and you’re walking next to a stream/waterfall/swimming hole almost the entire hike which makes the struggle bus heading back worth it!

Such an amazing hike! We did the loop a bit backwards and made sure we did Old Rag the first day due to weather conditions. Very thankful that we did because it poured all of the second day and the scramble would have been tough with the rain and our packs. 10/10 would recommend overall

Amazing trail to say the least. All the waterfalls r beautiful. It’s a very strenuous hike. We hiked down from Skyline Drive. Ok I wouldn’t usually do this but I got too, lol. With about 2 miles left I came across a beautiful girl that walked with us for a bit and we conversated. I never got her name. . She was with her aunt and uncle. They were all from PA. She said she lived not far from me. I’m an idiot. She said she was going to Rhode Island for school. I’m hoping her Aunt who uses AllTrails will see this. If so email me!! Lol. duerdie1@gmail.com. Thanks. Sorry about that. The trail is amazing if ur in Shenandoah and r an avid hiker it’s a must.

Awesome trail, but def a butt-kicker going from Skyline Dr and back bc legs were extra wobbly after first going downhill straight for almost 4 miles. Forgot to start recording so only caught last couple hours, which were the hardest. Saw all kinds of falls, a couple of which were breathtaking. Swimming hole at the lower falls was super fun (definitely recommend going for a dip). Trail was very well kept up, blazes were decent. Going on a weekday is key (we started at noon and finished up by 6pm including a lunch stop, a snack stop, lots of photos, and a fun time at the swimming hole). Parking was ample and right by a bathroom (@Skyland). Not very technical, but the incline down to the lower falls and back up was pretty steep w/lots of stairs. Really enjoyed this... next time will be back to tack on Cedar Run and Hawksbill (we parked at the wrong lot and so ended up just doing the White Oak Canyon out-and-back, so please make sure you don’t just put “white oak canyon trail parking” into google maps like we did!)

We started at the top and hiked down 3 miles. The waterfalls were stunning and had much more water than would typically expect in August. We hiked off trail to the bottom of most of them. Some sections of the trail were muddy, but that's to be expected after recent rains. Congested at points, but everyone was respectful. Loved it.

Definitely not 5.5hrs— we did it in about 4.25 with rain. Started from the top, went down, and then back up. There isn’t a clear turnaround point (we did at the bridge at mile 4.7) so track your mileage to decide when to head back. Overall great hike — the ascent was a blast! Read the signs when you’re hiking down so you don’t stray to another trail. Lots of swimming holes along the way and great waterfall views.

Nice loop trail with a little bit of everything, rock scrambles, scenic views, rivers, etc... As of August 23rd 2020, there is a detour near skyline drive and stony mt trail. It adds maybe a mile or 2 to the loop.

During times of COVID this trail has basically become a water park for non-hikers. SNP rangers are flooded and seem extremely unhappy with the traffic, maintenance, and clean up that has to associate with the thousands of visitors. Absolutely the most trail traffic I have ever seen. The trailhead parking lot is so flooded the property owners just outside have taken to charging hikers/swimmers $10 and their properties are full everyday too. I have hiked this trail 15+ times in my life and still love it. Just stay away during weekends right now.

BackpackingGreat!Rocky

Super rewarding trip. Best of few camp sites is on the backside of the Hawksbill trail. Giant site with plenty of trees for hammocks and soft flat ground for tents. Two or Three small water sources trickling down from rock formations on the trail around Crescent Rock. Saw some climbers at Little Stony Man. Incredibly rocky trail, do not attempt without legit hiking boots. Took us about 6 hours to get to camp at Hawksbill, then 5 hours back to Little Stony Man, 30-35lb packs, novice backpackers. Would rate it closer to hard than moderate because of rocky terrain and elevation changes.
