Nice historical adventure with the family. Snapped a pic with Phocohontas for the a child's memory book.

Very busy trail that passes under the natural bridge, past some caves, by a Native American interpretive village and alongside a river ending at a waterfall. Begins at the Visitors Center at the State Park. Fee and dog friendly.

Magnificent trail.... meticulously maintained, loads of wildlife and a wonderfully shaded canopy of trees......love it!

Great trail just to get out and about. Very easy. Make it longer by walking the Buttermilk trail to Belle Isle.

The most interesting run was when a beaver was swimming at the same pace as me.

Great short easy hike with my daughter out of a whim. Will be back and take longer path next time.

Hiked the orange trail with our 3.5 year old, he had no problems or issues at all. Fun trail, fairly secluded considering we went on a weekend mid-July. Mostly shaded. Unfortunately not much of a view at all, but the historical aspects that you come across are rather interesting.

We biked Damascus up to White Top. Took us about 3 hours. The last 3 miles kicked our butts but felt so good to get to the top. We started at mile marker 17 and ended at 33 I believe. The ride down to was a crazy!!!!! Fun but crazy. We were down in about 1 hour. The bridges and views are awesome. The next day we started at trail head in Abingdon and went to Damascus and back. Again the bridges and views were amazing. So in about 31 hours we did about 65 miles. This is an awesome experience. Pack plenty of water and healthy snacks. Not much along the way to get those essentials.

Very neat trail. Shaded and a lot of historical pieces along the trail. Bring water and bug spray!

nice trail for hiking or running. watch for glass. multiple times I stopped to pick up glass from broken bottles on the trail.

This was a beautiful trail. I started in Rice and walked all the way to the bridge. Be sure that you take the trail down to the river as well. Totally worth it. Backpacked a lunch and enjoyed it by the river. The main trail is very wide and has crush and run so it’s good for those who need more support and stability. Bring sunscreen as the mid day sun leaves no shade.

Great hike considering you are downtown richmond. Not very challenging, but constantly going up and down the river bank which it makes a moderate workout. Great views of the city and river. Great trail

Very nice beach! Relatively spacious for kids to run and play. And it is safe! There are cops and lifeguards that will quickly come if someone is in danger. There is a place to cookout, a big field with plenty of shade and places to play volleyball. And as I was leaving it seems that they were going to start some live music. Only thing I would warn is to not go into the water unless your putting your feet in or sitting right next to the riptide. The water is pretty dirty and I was instructed it is not meant for people especially kids to swim out too far.

When I did Whitetopto Damascus I thought I was in biking heaven then I found the open glades and varied terrain of the leg from Abingdon to Damascus. Much more open and still follows rushing waters and trestles galore. Dont miss scenic trestle 7 and the long ride over trestle 12. Wide open spaces , Rock walled forest trails and dense forest trails to hide from the sun a perfect mix. If you're planning your stay investigate rooms along the trail maybe even bikepack it. Have fun don't miss this one.

Nice trail with good path and scenery.

This is a great hike close to home. The trail is not cleaned up of branches and fallen trees regularly but I don’t mind. The lake is beautiful.

Great trail. Paved so great for strollers and families. Quite a few elevation changes that gives you that extra challenge especially if you’re running it. It’s completely covered in trees so it helps keep the sun off of you. So peaceful, one of my favorites.

Great trail. Flat so great for families, runs, strollers or pets. Bugs are insane though. Beautiful view of the lake. Very few tree coverage so I would save this hike for cooler days since you will break a sweat.. Bring tons of water!

love this trail. plan a stop at Alvaro for some desserts!!

First bit of advice: BE CAREFUL! This is a nice trail, but if you use the section that’s closer to George Washington’s home, there are a lot of narrow, steep, and blind curves.

My first outing on it was eventful, to say the least...I was coming around a narrow and steep curve on my bike, and caught my tire on something. Wiped out, hit my head, and wound up with 6 staples (yes, even while wearing a helmet). Apparently, crashes are pretty common on the trail, especially in the area where I was (per another cyclist who frequents it).

It was pretty crowded on our way back to the car (I crashed with only a few miles left on the ride), but when we got on it at opening (6am), it was pretty clear. Early in the morning is best when it’s nice out. Otherwise, it seems like can get pretty dicey when having to deal with steep, blind curves and crowds.

I will say that if you do have an issue, the other cyclists on the trail are very nice and are willing to help. My husband was about 1/2 a mile behind me when I crashed and before he got to me, three cyclists had already stopped and were waiting with me. One went on his way after my husband caught up after making sure I could walk. The other two stayed with me while my husband rode the rest of the trail back to the car to come and get me. I am thankful for such caring people.

All in all, this trail is worth a go. It is nice and the people on the trail are great. But again, whether you’re a cyclist, runner etc...be very careful.

Great views of the James River. Fantastic place to go for an afternoon stroll. Pack a lunch and enjoy a superb river view from downtown Richmond.

Some bouldering or mountain biking can be thrown in for an extra fun element.

I enjoy having a decent set of walking trails within a 5 minute drive from home. These make for a great Saturday or Sunday morning stroll far more interesting than a roadway walk.

we didnt do the whole trail. the map is not completely accurate, so we missed a few turn offs, but it call connents and is a good hike.

I ended up walking 2 miles down the road next to the trail, getting to the bridge and thinking to myself: “huh, how do i get up there?” I realized I wasn’t even on the trail. I did go back and loop around to it. From what I did complete, it is a nice trail that has a little bit of traffic on the weekends from bikers/runners but nothing to be concerned about. Going to go back and do the full trail soon. Nice area of the city that I would recommend for anyone wanting to spend a few hours outdoors.
