This was nice for a challenging and quiet run with only a couple other people using the trails. I ran it counterclockwise meaning that the views were all within the first couple miles. I’d do it in reverse next time. Trail is varied from non technical fire road to some very technical single track. The two overlooks are beautiful, and the trail is generally a mixture of serene woods and open meadows that keep the run fresh and interesting. If you’re feeling more, add the Snowden loop for an extra 3/4 of a mile or so. I’d happily run this trail again!

Great combination of woods, hills and meadows.

Gap Run is an ok trail, and you can make it a bigger loop by adding the north ridge (a little more difficult) and then back on south ridge to Boston Mill Rd. However, you get better views by simply doing the Piedmont Overlook trail.

We had a great walk today on this trail nice mix of uphill on the front end and some flat and rolling hills halfway through. This is if you start from South Ridge Trail. Great views from Piedmont overlook! Definitely get a map beforehand. we were glad we saw that in the previous reviews.

did this trail mixed with the ambassador trail and the old trail to make about 8-9 miles. nice views and easy paths

Just a nuisance piece of the trail - no views, the trail is routed well below the parallel ridge line above instead of near the top so every spur ridge must be climbed up and down. Trail is well-maintained but boring.

1st time hiking this trail. Only did partial, my new waterproof hiking shoes were killing my toes. Love this trail, fun, challenging, and all the stream crossing. Would definitely come back with different shoes.

We really enjoyed this hike. Fortunately, another reviewer suggested getting a map from a park ranger. We wouldn’t have been able to follow the series of trails without it. Lucked into a strawberry festival in the park at the end. Nothing like a cold lemonade after a hike!

Very nice and relaxing stroll. Not much change in elevation. Very quiet.

We hiked from VA 601 to VA 605 today, and this was a great 7.5 mile hike. Didn’t seem hard to our group of 6, ranging in age from 48-60 something. We loved it! Never seen so many bloodroot. The bluebells were beautiful. Many creek crossings - super day on the AT.

Great and tough section of trail and the AT groups in the area have done a great job maintaining it, especially since the wind storm in early March blew over some of the big trees. Be extra cautious during or directly following rain as this is a rocky section with lots of dead leaves in some areas that could prove to be super slippery.

You can day-park your car at the Bear's Den hostel endpoint for $3 (or hitch a ride back to your car pretty easily)

13.6 miles from Bear's Den Parking Lot to Rt 50 parking lot. There were some blow down areas due to the wind storm on 3/3/18, but ATC was out there starting to clear the trail. Tough as always but worth the time and we had a beautiful day.

A nice trail but make sure to get the map from the park ranger before starting. There is no trail called Sky Meadow Loop rather its a bunch of trails.

Awesome park. Going up Piedmont Overlook was hard right at the beginning of the hike. I will go the other way up South Ridge next time. This will also be great for the view coming down Piedmont Overlook. Overall awesome hike.

Our first time in Sky Meadows State Park and hiking their trails. beautiful vistas all around. Most of the trailhead start well inside the park and feed into each other at the visitor center. We brought our young dog and she had a good walk, especially when she cooled off a bit in the small stream. We took the Snowden trail which is it's own loop through the woods, up and down equally. Nice in the shade, a little buggy today, but not bad. All and all, a great Independence Day outing. A note of advise, get to know your trail map so you can choose. I found the map a little more confusing than the trail markers.

This is an easy and pretty woodland loop at the end of Boston Mill Road, which we then took to get back to the visitor center/farmhouse area to complete our beautiful morning of hiking at Sky Meadows.

We completed the trail near the end of our loop with the Piedmont Overlook and North Ridge Trails. We enjoyed the sounds of the flowing stream as we descended through the woods. However, my favorite portion of the trail was when it emerged to striking rolling meadow views framed by wonderful summer cloud formations and lots of beautiful wildflowers.

Great hike

Walked this yesterday in the snow and saw nice views of rolling hills. The section within the park is a bit short, so added a bit on the Appalachian Trail to increase the mileage. All trails are well marked. The Appalachia Trail does hook back up with the park trails, even though it is in't obvious on the alltrails map. Paid $5 using the honor system envelopes at the entrance booth to park; saw some people get ticketed for not paying, so I'd pay the fee if you stop by an no one is manning the station.

Took this as an alternative route to Piedmont Overlook. It offered nice shade on a 92 degree day, but it lacked the views you get on the approach up the Piedmont loop trail. Still a nice walk in the woods, though.

A nice trail, but I hope you were planning to do Gap Run. That is how you get to it.

Other than being listed in the wrong park, this is a nice walk.

This trail is in Sky Meadows State Park, not Shenandoah National Park. It starts behind the visitor center on 710. Take it to the Snowden Loop Trail.

Another one of the park's short trails. You will need to take Gap Run to get to it.
