Gorgeous trail. Rhododendrons in full bloom, felt like a tropical jungle in some spots.

Pretty easy hike if you start on the 43 side of it. excellent views at several different spots. could easily be turned into an overnight backpack trip for those in no rush. there is an AT shelter about 3/4 of the way through, but NO WATER on the trail.

Nice hike. Very little elevation change. I parallels the Parkway.

This hike is much easier than McAfee Knob or Dragons Tooth but I'm not in shape enough to call any 7.7 mile hike "easy". Lol. It was great! Crosses over the parkway several times, so you could shorten the hike by parking at any of several overlooks along the way. In the winter many places offer a through trees, view on both sides of the trail!
This is a new favorite for sure. Only downside is most of the trail you can hear traffic on the parkway.

A great experience!!!

I'm puzzled why the overview states this is recommended only for very experienced outdoorsmen. I've done the section from VA-43 to Cove Mountain shelter with my dogs multiple times in the last 3 years, and the section from Jennings Creek to the shelter twice. It isn't any more difficult to follow than any other section of the AT I have ever hiked, nor is it particularly strenuous. During leaf off there are some nice views of Sharp Top Mountain about 2 miles after you leave VA-43.

Easy hike! I did it with 26 ninth grade students. We did 8.3 miles in 3.45 hours, on a very foggy, damp day.
