The entire New River Trail stretches for a total of 57 miles. Foster Falls seems to be about mid point between Fries VA pronounced Freeze. The Northern stretch from Foster Falls to Dora Junction (Draper VA) is a 4% grade going up and from Foster Falls to Fries is a 4% uphill trek. My wife and I did the trail in two legs. Fries to Foster Falls 4% grade going down and the northern start of the trail at Dora Junction going down 4% all the way to Foster Falls. It is a beautiful trail to experience lined with breadth taking views of the New River, many old railroad trestle's to cross with a tunnel to go through as well. Foster Falls host a Welcome Center with State run facilities since it is a state park. Primitive camping is available at the Foster Falls Park site as well as designated primitive sites along the trail. The Mercantile in Draper VA has a livery shop where bikes can be rented if only a portion of the trail catches your interest. From Draper to Hiwassee where one of the most picturesque views of the New River can be seen on top of an old railroad trestle that crosses the river. If you are fortunate enough you just might see a trail angel that frequents the trail from time to time. The New River Trail is one of the greatest outdoor recreation activity you will find in the state of VA that offers hiking, biking or horse backing it.

Love this trail, great for families with little ones

Perfect long run location, mostly flat and views of the Claytor Lake. Can be crowded at times but the trail is on a 15-20’ Wide old RR bed and is well maintained.

Beautiful views and perfect for longer flat runs. You have to share the trail with horse riders and bikes but it's not a big deal . Well maintained

Awesome views, nice easy trail that's not too strenuous. Plenty of places to take detours down to enjoy the river. I had a hybrid bike and rode the trails just fine.

Was a little hesitant to ride on this trail simply because none of it is paved. However, I was pleasantly surprised that the trail is fairly smooth. Had a great time and rode from Pulaski to the Hiwassee Trustle (out and back just a little over 17 miles). As per the NRV Trail Template, the trail is actually 57 miles long (one way). The only complaint I have about the trail is the fact that you have to dodge horse droppings.

I hiked the Gambetta to Fries Junction segment. It is a great way to get to the main New River Trail. It follows the picturesque Chestnut Creek. It includes a tunnel and crosses the river at the Fries Junction bridge (the longest of the three major bridges). I am sure I will be back soon to explore other parts of the trail.

Bikers beware! This trail has gone to the horses. We visit this trail every year but we're very disappointed this year. From mile 24-34 the trail has been destroyed by horses. To the parks credit they were working even on Sunday to drag the trail to help improve conditions. The views of the river are beautiful. I hope they are able to get the trail back in good condition soon.

We utilize this trail in the winter months when we do dry-land mushing with our huskies. Gentle grade and scenery that can't be beat. Places to picnic - tables and benches, great trestle bridges and a few tunnels. One of the best - upkeep is wonderful.

New River Trail Cruise - Galax is a portion of the New River Trail State Park which runs from Fries to Pulaski, Va - which includes the Galax to Fries Spur. It is part of the Rails to Trails program. The trail is crushed stone, wide, very little grade, with lots of scenery. The trail has multiple bridges and a tunnel. It is a multi-use trail for hiking, biking, and horseback riding. Multiple access points - some pay to park ($2-$3). I rode my Mt. Bike the length of the trail - easy to ride with little effort. Great scenery along Chestnut Creek. - Aprox. 12 miles from Galax to Fries Junction of New River Trail.
