A hidden gem in the Northern Neck, the trails here are entirely under canopy. Many different trails to mix, match, and connect. As others have said, some trail junctions are not marked well but with a trail map, it's not difficult to figure out where you are. We heard lots of birds but did not see many due to the tree cover. As of 5/30/2020 the website for the Preserve is https://northernneckaudubon.squarespace.com/hickory-hollow

Very nice local trail. Almost entirely under tree canopy. Lightly used, we saw two other families in over 2 hours. Even with a GPS trail map, we found it challenging to stay on the planned trail. Maybe too many various color markers with a LOT of trail intersections. The trails would be better if they would lay them out in single colors based on distance and maybe reduce 8 different color trails to 3 or 4. Overall though, very nice afternoon hike!

This trail seems to be a combination of all the trails it goes to the road and many other spots that you wouldn't expect I don't know if this is an actual trail because some of the trail on the app was a road leading to different areas on the park. It seems a bit expensive but if you're up for a challenge and a long walk or run it is what you want

This trail is a little tricky there are a lotta off routes and alternatives that you can take. If you want to take the exact trail that is on Alltrails be sure to keep the app handy and check when you come to cross roads. The cool thing about this trail is there are a lot of Informational signs about types of plants and animals located around the trail.

Very flat, a service road the entire way to the river. May be great for exercise but not the most ideal for nature lovers. Some swampy areas that are beautiful but mostly service road.

Personally I thought this trail and area was wonderful. Once inside it’s a beautiful walk in the woods with no interruption. We walked out to the overlook (although it’s not much of an overlook) and continued around the main loop. The area is mostly flat with little to no elevation. There’s tons of trees among the path, it makes you feel as if you’re in seclusion.

Nice trail. Very little shading on parts so if it is extremely hot this would not be ideal. It was muddy from the rain the day before and we had to cut some out due to the standing water forcing us off trail to go around. We did see some wildlife but wished the trail was a bit more along the water’s edge. Overall it was a nice, flat, easy hike.

Easy trail for a nice walk in the morning. The trail goes around a corn field along the edge of the woods. We tend to go late morning and have not seen much wildlife. If the goal is to be up and moving, then this trail does fit that bill. Bring bugs spray.

Beautiful pristine trails. Short on wildlife my day but saw the rare tidewater amphipod. Be on the lookout for 2 adult pit bulls no collar ,no owner just roaming No overt aggression but will make you uncomfortable by bumping you with body and smelling you and pushing against you with closed mouth. May not be there on your day

Easy walk. Did it with a 4 year old. Follows the edge of a corn field. Lots of blackberries, blueberries, wild grapes and a mulberry tree.

We walked this afternoon and we had a great time. We walked the additional trails that are connected with the main trail and walked 3.6 miles.

Most of the trails are wide and very noticeable but others are very narrow and look almost like a deer trail. If you're not paying attention you could get lost. There was quiet a few places to sit and rest, that was nice! I wouldn't go back in the middle of summer because I can imagine there being lots of critters you don't want to run into.

Nice set of trails. The map and blazing will be improved soon. The NN chapter of Virginia Master Naturalists are working on improvements. Hickory Hollow has some rare flora. If you are into geocaching, there are quite a few in the area.

Mosquito heaven, but the views of the wetlands and the Rappahannock River are great. The corn fields, not so much. If you're into migratory birds, you'll see plenty here. Bring the bug spray.

It was okay. Forested wetland with lots of birds (and squirrels) if you're into birding. I couldn't enjoy my hike as much because of the many of mosquitoes. So bring spray!

Belle Isle state park is truly a beautiful place. There are some amazing views of the water and a ton of wildlife. We came across a huge buck, a bunny, and a bald eagle. The trail was easy to follow. We cut it a bit short cause I could tell Penny was getting tired. The only reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 was because a portion of the trail was under water and we had to cut through the woods to bypass it. There were also a ton of ticks so be sure to check carefully afterwards.

Definitely very overgrown and poorly maintained in spots. There is a spot near the start of the white trail if you go right that has about 50 feet of glass on the trail. Maybe not a problem for humans in proper hiking boots but very scary for dogs. I chose to pick up and carry my 60+ lb dog over it and still worried about her feet. I'm not sure how that much glass came to be on the trail short of some deliberately dumping it there. The trail is poorly blazed at some points but it isn't so bad as to get lost though a few times I questioned if we were on the trail or a deer path until I'd see the next trail blaze. As far as trails go in Lancaster it wasn't half bad and was nice to go somewhere new though I wouldn't go in the summer, you'd get eaten alive by bugs and have to deal with snakes being hard to see. I'd prefer to stick to better maintained trails in the area but I might go back on occasion.

Not a bad trail- mostly woods. Lots of spiderwebs. Some of the trail markings are confusing

Easy, flat trail. There were tree roots in the path but it was well cleared otherwise. To many spiders, I'm pretty sure I was totally covered in spider webs by the end. Not much to look at but trees.

Hike is easy to do. Very kid friendly and beautiful views. Definitely recommend!!

Small network of well blazed trails with some picnic spots, tree markers, and water lookouts.

Nice walk on well-blazed trails. Some elevation changes and a minor amount of water to view, but mostly wooded. Deer flies were relentless!

This was a good hike, pretty scenic. Most of the trails are improved paths because it is not great if you are looking for an adventure, but if you're looking for a nice stroll through the woods it was pretty nice. The marsh/bay looked great for canoeing so I really wanna come back and try that out.

The trails are decent; very simple. I mostly come here for the kayaking!

I am sure we will be back to do the rest of the trails but since there is so much open to the sun it will have to wait. It is in the 90's every day. I liked the little camp store.

This is my favorite kind of trail; small but easy to follow and shaded. It joins the White Trail for over half the loop.

Very flat and wide open. Many of the trails are in the open. The river views are awesome and, like all Virginia State Parks, so are the friendly rangers.

Beautiful forest but not much else The little streams did little. But it was a beautiful day to be in the woods. The trails are very easy to follow. They run in straight lines much of the time and are well blazed.
